The following is a Birthday Card that was sent to Philip back in the day...Cousin Phyllis sent Birthday Cards to all of us through the years and completed the Huffman-Shortt Genealogy book back in the 90's & we had an awesome Huffman Family Reunion during that period at Lake Villa, IL. It was a time when Phil was able to travel & he & Robert, our brother took off together.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL,

YOU'VE MADE OUR FAMILY TREE....
A NICER PLACE TO BE.....

Phyllis
from my Heart to yours!

Dear Cousins,
Although Philip could be the most frustrating, taciturn person @ times, when he talked about you and the Family, it was obvious that he loved you all. I also think from his letters I could tell that he counted on you, Terry --and I may be wrong, but I don't think there were many people he let himself count on.
I just wanted to let you know that Philip meant a lot to me, even
though we grew apart after he left Hines to come home. When he got to Great Lakes, we were both late teens/early 20's, neither of us had much to say and both of us were miserable. He, of course had a much more concrete reason, mine was just teenage angst. I remember the 1st few weeks of hardly talking, then finally beginning to trust each other. Sometimes we would have huge fights (well, for 2 quiet people, they seemed huge to me!) Once I got so mad @ him I stopped visiting for a couple of months, but I missed him & started visiting again. I didn't visit him because I was a nice person, I visited him because I enjoyed it-he was interesting, quirky at times and he had a gentle soul.
I will miss knowing he's on this earth and if there's a better place waiting, I know he's there. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Your cousin from Chicago, Kerry

This man was my hero! As well as my husbands best friend & brother. I miss his smile and that twinkle of his eyes. He was a man that never judged anyone and was there like a rock to help with anything. I was only giving 29 years to have him as my family, wouldn't give up one minute. As our hearts are broken by his loss, I choose to look to the brightest star in the heavens above for his confort. One of the very best has gone to heaven to walk with the Angels which he so deserves. Love and miss you Phil till we meet again.

Phil was a tough marine that put up a major battle with his condition, I know many of of us would of throw in the towel long ago. He was always helping the families and did very little for himself. We enjoyed our visits and conversations with him and will miss his sense of humor that was sometimes hard to pull out of him. RIP my fellow Vet.

My uncle Phil
He was wonderful, kind, and caring... He was always there for the family.
