While I could not be there in person to celebrate Grandpas life, I have been thinking a lot about him recently, and what hes meant to me. Being so far apart, we did not get to see each other as much as wed like but hes nevertheless played an important role in my life. In fact he named me!
I have two well three primary things to thank Grandpa for. First, as I mentioned earlier, I owe him for both my first and middle names! As the story goes, my mom was ready to name me Sam, when Grandpa looked at her and said, You dont want to name him Sam Scott is much better. Thank goodness. I dont look like a Sam. Im also grateful that my parents decided to give me Felix as a middle name its always a talking point with strangers and gives me that chance to talk about Grandpa in the most unexpected ways. I look forward to continuing to tell his story.
Second, I have Grandpa to thank for one of my first true loves baseball. He introduced me to the game that has been a significant part of my life and was a central part of my upbringing. I cant remember ever seeing grandpa without a Royals hat and remember being amazed that he kept up with all the trades, free agent signings and stats well into the latest years of his life. I plan to do the same with the Giants.
With all that Grandpa has given me, I think I will remember him most for his smile and laugh. It always seemed like he was smiling at some hidden joke that no one else had heard. Like that Royals hat, I cant even conjure an image of Grandpa where hes not smiling.
Grandpa and Grandma were the quintessential American Story. I cant recall how many times Ive told people about these two, one a farmer from Kansas that didnt finish high school and got his GED in the Navy and the other the daughter of a small business owner who had to put herself through secretary school,, neither of whom attended college raising a family with three kids who went on to graduate from Yale, Harvard and Stanford. It still astounds me. And more importantly, they did this together as a team. In fact, even saying the words Grandpa and Grandma separately is foreign to me. I only think of them together, as in GrandpaAndGrandma. Their love of 65 years is a role model for us all.
Now the third thing I have Grandpa and Grandma to thank for is raising the amazing person that is my mom. Growing up so far away from Grandpa and Grandma didnt give me many opportunities to experience them firsthand. But I was lucky enough to feel their impact every day through my mom. I feel their tenacity, generosity, laugher and love through her. And Ill always have them to thank.

Terri & Dennis,
I'm so sorry to hear about you father. Growing up I always loved it when he'd let me ride on the route. I'll never forget him giving me my 1st dip of Skoal. Threw up all over the front of his truck and no spare papers that day. Later had the honor to work for your mom and dad, on the truck and down town route. Never was a dull moment. Wish all of you the best, I'll always have great memories of your dad. Great Man.

Dobbels Family: So sorry to hear of the loss of Felix. It sounds like he had a rich and full life! Felix and Gerry were the best parents that teachers could ask for! Always so supportive and involved with their children. Great memories of Dennis and Terri! God Bless you all in this time of loss! Rest in Peace Felix.
