PHILIP CORBETT Obituary

Phil released his soul on or about November 30, 2013 to a place all of us aspire to reach, God rest his soul. Phil was born on November 30, 1947 and grew up in Prairie Village. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1965. In 1966 Phil joined the U.S. Navy and attained the rank of hospital Corpsman, grade E-4, and was honorably discharged in 1970. While in the Navy he served one tour of duty in Vietnam as a hospital corpsman in a medical unit close to Danang where he and his fellow corpsman cared for the dead and wounded. He participated in medical evacuations of Danang and didn't often speak of those days as there were painful memories associated with those events. Phil served his country honorably, was very proud of his military service, of all who serve, and to those who continue to serve our country. Upon leaving the USN, Phil realized life was extremely short and made a conscious decision he would never take life too seriously and he lived life to its fullest. Many stories are told of Phil and his zest for life. I can personally attest to some of those events, as I witnessed a number of them from having lived with Phil in our post military life. Phil knew a wide range of people in and around Kansas City and most who knew him have stories to tell. Thank you all for being a part of his life, he loved all of you. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Philip and Faye Corbett, and sister, Jane Bartmess. He is survived by his sister Judy Bishop and spouse Peggy and family, of Lee's Summit, MO, his brother William Corbett and spouse Susan, and family, of Shawnee, KS. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and other relatives of the extended family and a great number of friends and associates Phil met along the way through life. Graveside services will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, KS at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 20, 2013. A celebration of Phil's life will be held on December 19 at 9:00 P.M., 'All Hands Will Muster On The Quarter Deck'. I just learned that Phil died and pass along belated sympathy and my own sadness to family! I was Phil's girlfriend (off and on) for 15 years! I am in the photos of him at SMEHS 35th class reunion. Due to one of Phil's devilish machinations (which I won't reveal) we shared a lot of laughs and good times at the party! Phil, I loved you and you will always be in my heart! Please be laughing your impish laugh eternally!

I was looking through old photos, and believe it or not, I remembered Phil from GRADE school in Prairie Village, KS. He lived in my neighborhood as well. My condolences go out to your family. I hope that Phil did not suffer when he left this world.

When Phil left the building, the party was over. He made a lot of people happy to know him. He was deep, but he preferred to be funny. I'm very sorry to hear about all the suffering he went through in his final battle. RIP Phil

Phil is a memorable character. I knew Phil from the 70's and I always felt he would have been and artist if he hadn't been in the military. He was always special to my family and went out of his way to take time with us. With blessings, the Peebles family.

We were neighbors, classmates, and our fathers were fishing buddies; what a lot of good times to remember. We extend our sympathy to those with more recent connections.
For the Brace family.

Got to know Phil back in the days of Hubbell Tyner working projects together. Sometimes the fellas said you could hear us laughing throughout the warehouse. Prepare the party old bud, the rest of us will be along soon enough.

Phil was one of the first people I met after moving to KC in 1962. He was kind, friendly and made me laugh. Mike and I extend our condolences to Billie and the family. You are in our prayers.

Mr Phil had this COOLEST red convertible sports car, he would come down to the Westside often driving this vehicle. He was just a crazy cool man! Rest in peace my friend.
