Dr. and Mrs. Gullum were our next door neighbors on corner of Ridgecane Road and Sebastian Lane. Besides keeping up his property with the finest of everything, what struck us immediately was how polite and friendly he was; the opposite of stereotypical "older retired curmudgeon". Mrs. Gullum had already suffered a stroke before they moved in, so the new house was outfitted to suit her special needs. She was obviously extremely well cared for and always friendly with a big smile, as he helped her stay mobile for many years.

The best memory I have is seeing them at every single election at Dunbar HS, he assisting with her walker, so they could get out and vote, no matter what the weather, no matter how long the line. No early voting for those two! The satisfaction to partake along with everyone else seems such a simple pleasure. After she passed and he moved, I missed being able to greet the couple at every election afterwards without them.
