Ellen - I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. What an extraordinary person. You got good genes. Father and Daughter relationships are special. Priceless memories will sustain you through this grief. Sending you lots of prayers.

Cox family: I had the pleasure of working with Earl at the CJ. I made up the sports pages and worked closely with him. I haven't seen him in thirty years but I always considered him a friend. He used to give me the CJ's University of Kentucky basketball tickets when no one else was using them. Sports in Kentucky owe much to him. My condolences and prayers to Mrs. Cox and his children.

My mother, Marie Benton, and her brothers Elmer, Oscar, Jr., and James William Benton, were Earl's cousins. They also grew up in Irvine. Earl bore a resemblance to mom's brothers, in fact. Mom was so proud of Earl and enjoyed it when his name showed up in the press. Living in Owensboro and then in Louisville, I would read his sports columns frequently. I might have met Earl years ago when my grandfather, Oscar Kidwell Benton, Sr., passed away and was buried in Irvine. In any event, I am pleased to know that I have cousins--Scott Cox, Ellen Call, Sarah Pridham, and their children--who will carry on Earl's legacy. What an extraordinary person who touched so many lives and left a lasting legacy. Sincerely, Robin Carole Lee Dorsey University of Louisville
