Aunt Lillie Mae was an inspiration to us all. She combined hard work and good humor to (seemingly effortlessly) attend to the needs of others, always before her own. I've always loved to hear the stories of her missionary work in Africa and have been endlessly impressed by the degree she got to know the people, their language, and their culture. I credit Aunt Lillie Mae, in large part, for sparking my own interest in Africa, which led to an undergraduate degree in African Studies, and ultimately my current work in Nutrition. Looking back, my interest in community-engaged research was likely inspired by her deep appreciation for the communities in which she lived and worked.
We will miss her greatly but honor her memory through our work and relationships going forward.
- Alice Ammerman (niece; daughter of Howard Ammerman)
