DAWSON Frederick "Fred", 76, husband of 54 years to Barbara Gardner Dawson, died Mon, Aug 29, at his residence. Born Dec 7, 1939 in South Shields, County Durham, England, he was the son of the late Frederick and Sarah Jane Kidd Dawson. Mr. Dawson attended Durham University and Sunderland College in England earning his Mine Manager Certification and Charter Engineership. In 1969, he immigrated to Alberta, Canada with his family. While working for McIntyre Porcupine Mining, he captained and trained mine rescue teams traveling to different states to participate in mine rescue competitions. From there his career led him to West Virginia, Oklahoma, and eventually Kentucky. In 1979 he and his family became naturalized American citizens. They lived in Prestonsburg, Floyd County, KY for 23 years operating coal operations for Zapata, Steven Lee Enterprises, Florida Power, Wheelwright Mining, Branham & Baker/Quaker Coal Company, then completed his career, starting and operating a mining complex in Russia. Upon retiring in 2000, he and his wife moved to Lexington to be closer to their UK graduate children and two grandchildren. Survivors other than his wife include one son, Nicholas (Carmie) Dawson, Lexington, KY; one daughter, Susanne Dawson, Knoxville, TN; two grandsons, Andrew and Ethan Dawson, both of Lexington, KY; and brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Lily Mawson, of South Shields, England. He was preceded in death by a brother, James William Dawson. Funeral services will be held 12:30pm Fri, Sep 2, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. George Love. Visitation will be 5-8pm Thurs.

I am so sorry for your loss. Fred was a wonderful person who was always positive and happy, despite his illness. I will miss my conversations with him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
