Donald L. Cowdery

Sept. 26, 1928 to Feb. 17, 2018

Donald L. Cowdery was born on a farm in Birmingham, Illinois, Sept. 26, 1928 to Author and Alta Mae Cowdery. The seventh of 10 children, all predeceased him, also first wife Lorraine and their daughter Donna McPherson.

He is survived by his second wife of 42 years, Florence Cowdery; son-in-law, Monte McPherson; grandson, Morgan (Jamie); and great-grandson, Eli; son, Tom (Joyce); granddaughter, Monica; and grandson, Max.

Don's work life began as farm laborer, warehouse, Caterpillar Factory and Government Arsenal. At age 16, he enlisted in the Navy, serving on nine ships in the Pacific for 23 years. In 1968, he began 20 plus years as a U.S. postal city carrier in Port Orchard.

In retirement he enjoyed gardening, fishing, wood cutting and travel. He was a member of Unity Church, Masons, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, AARP, NARFE, NALC, and six veteran groups. He proudly wore his uniform and World War II medals several times a year.

He lost his life to asbestos and heart disease on Feb. 17, 2018. At his request a memorial service will held at the Disabled American Veterans Hall, Bremerton, to include military honors on April 21, 2018 at 1 p.m. Potluck reception to follow the service.
