James Montgomery "Monte" Evans, age 86, of Knoxville, passed away on February 15, 2018 from complications of Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Monte was born on November 28, 1931, in Dyersburg, Tennessee. He spent his childhood in Germantown, Tennessee, and graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Memphis. Monte earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at the College of William and Mary.

Monte was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Following his discharge from the Army, he was employed by his family's business, S.R. Hungerford Furniture Manufacturing Company in Memphis. After the business closed he earned a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and a Master of Education degree at Memphis State University. With the exception of four years when he was with the Alabama Department of Revenue, Monte spent the remainder of his career as an educator in Tennessee, Virginia and Texas.

An avid outdoorsman, Monte was a highly proficient hunter, fisherman and trapper and he delighted in taking his daughters on outdoor adventures throughout their childhoods. He was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed weekend flying for many years. Monte was an ardent follower of William and Mary football who traveled to see the Tribe play whenever possible. He and his wife Zoe traveled extensively; they visited all 50 U.S. states and all 7 continents of the world, with Finland being Monte's favorite destination. He served with the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Monte was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he attended the James Park Sunday School class.
