Phyllis "Phyl" Musick Prince
Bristol, VA
Mrs. Phyllis "Phyl" Musick Prince, age 86, of Bristol, Va., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. She was born October 5, 1931 in Honaker, Va., the daughter of the late Robert Ryland and Mertie Crabtree Musick.
Family was by far the most important aspect of Mrs. Prince's life. She and her late husband, Dr. John Martin Prince, reared a close-knit family of six children in Wise, Va. She had fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Her moments of greatest joy came whenever her big brood would gather for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other family gatherings. One of her favorite family events, which took place during the summers while her grandkids were growing up, was "Grandmama Camp." This annual tradition built lasting bonds and connections. Activities included theater productions, cookie baking, and movie nights.
Mrs. Prince was an exceptionally talented and accomplished woman. After working for a short time following graduation from Virginia Intermont College, she dedicated the next chapter of her life to her husband and children, working as a stay-at-home Mom. After all six kids graduated from college, she turned her considerable energies to building a small business of her own. Starting as a home-based crafts enterprise, "Phyl's Toys and Gifts" grew into a successful and thriving business with, at its height, locations in both Norton and Bristol, Virginia. She remained involved in the business well into her 80s before retiring and closing the last location, "Phyl's of Bristol," in 2016.
With a quick-wit, dry sense of humor, and an unapologetically-colorful way with words, Mrs. Prince lived life to the fullest. Crewel embroidery and cross stitch were passions and she completed countless beautiful pieces of needle work that have become treasured family heirlooms. An avid reader, she devoured fiction at a rate of two-to-three novels per week. She loved to travel with her husband and family and had a particular fondness for theater trips to New York.
Mrs. Prince was once described as a "tough old bird." This was perhaps her least favorite of the many nicknames bestowed by her family, but it was unquestionably accurate. She was a survivor, having overcome a brain hemorrhage, ovarian cancer, a broken hip, triple bypass surgery, a spinal compression fracture, and once famously picked herself up off the pavement of the Food City parking lot and drove herself home after being stuck by a hit-and-run pickup truck.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond Musick, Robert Muisk, Clifford Musick, and Thurman Musick; her sister Dolly Mulky her son-in-law and the son of her heart, Phillip Timp.
She is survived by children, John Martin "Marty" Prince Jr. and wife Jacque, Steven Prince and wife Sheila, Cindy Timp, William "Bill" Prince and wife Gena, Phillip Prince and wife Andrea, Jeff Prince and partner Michael Jolly; fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; several loving in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 24 at 4 PM followed by a 5 PM memorial service at the Wise Baptist Church, 211 Spring Avenue in Wise, VA. Immediately following the service, the family will host a celebratory reception in Mrs. Prince's memory at The Inn at Wise, 110 E Main St, Wise, VA. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served.
