The Howard family is blessed to have had "Herb" as one of its most inspiring members. Every family member I have met has talked with awe and tenderness about the positive influence of their cousin Herb. I am so glad to have been able to talk with him.

You were and you are a great teacher and role model for us all. As one of your former students I thank you for guiding me through good and bad times at the university. I shall miss you very, very much.

Dr. Howard was a wonderful professor and later friend. I always enjoyed his take on the world and the changing landscape of the news business. It has been nearly 25 years since I first met him. He was forever gracious and considerate, even to those "older" doctoral students he steadfastly supported. He will be missed.

Dr. Howard was a true gentleman and scholar and we are proud to call him a Tennessee broadcaster. He was always available and participating in everything the TAB did. Honored with both our highest honors, he was a Lifetime Member and a Distinguished Service Award recipient.
