I just found out about Dr Knowlings passing. He was such a great doctor and most of all a great person. I worked with Dr Knowling in the OR for several years. I have such great memories. He called me "long tall sally" he would call and make sure I could help him or he'd reschedule his case. We had a great time talking about our families. He came to the hospital to see me & my husband when we had our youngest son. He brought him a cute green singing frog. He was always so thoughtful and caring. He inspired me to further my nursing education. He came to my graduation.
He encouraged me to advance my career as he retired with his. He would always send me a Christmas card every single year and I would send him a birthday card and a few days later a Christmas card. I always updated him on my family. He always wanted to know about me, my husband, and our boys. I was so excited to send him a card this year to brag on both my boys. My oldest is married with a successful career and a baby on the way. My youngest just started med school and recently married. I'm sad to be sending a shared memory instead of a card. I will miss him and every year at Christmas I will think of him with a smile. He was a blessing to me. I know he's smiling above in peace. He will be missed by many.
Pam Walker, aka long tall sally

Cindy, Ed, Michael and Kathy, Dr. Knowling was one of the finest and smartest people I have ever known. He was extremely kind to me and my family through the years. I will always have fond memories of my college days working in surgery at SMMC and talking with him about UT sports and life in general. He was truly a great man.
