Charlotte MATHEWS Obituary

January 1, 1931 - October 22, 2017 Our beloved family matriarch Charlotte Dallett Mathews - mother of four, grandmother of six, great- grandmother of three, and dear friend to many -- passed away at age 86 at the Villa Gardens Retirement Community in Pasadena - her home for the past 11 years. Having battled poor health for several months, she spent her final hours in peaceful sleep, surrounded by her loving family. Charlotte was born in Hopewell, VA in 1931, the only surviving child of Lawrence R. Dallett and Anna Mae (Hutchins) Dallett. She was raised in suburban Philadelphia, and, at age 15, moved with her family to Southern California. After graduating from Riverside Poly HS, she attended Pomona College, where she earned her degree in chemistry and met her future husband Jon Mathews. Jon and Charlotte were married during the weekend of their graduation from Pomona in June 1952. Charlotte and Jon settled in Altadena, CA and raised four children. She was active member of her community, her church, and the PTA of her children's schools. During her 40s, Charlotte earned an MBA at USC and began a career in banking that lasted two decades before she retired from Wells Fargo in the mid-1990s. During this period, she lived in a house of her own design in Altadena, and was a fully engaged member of St Mark's Episcopal Church, where she held several vestry posts and served on the Altar Guild and handbell choir. In 2006, Charlotte moved to Villa Gardens, where she became a popular resident and beloved friend to many. Her wide-ranging interests included astronomy, writing, painting, classical music, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, Indian culture, collecting fine glassware, travel, and doting on her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren. Charlotte authored "Love and Kisses from India", a memoir of her year of residence in that country during the 1960s. She will be remembered for her wit and sense of humor; her advocacy of equal rights for all; and as a person who made friends easily. Charlotte is survived by her four married children, all California residents -- daughters Valerie Mathews (Ted Ancona) of Altadena and Jancis (Michael) Martin of Rio Vista; and sons Richard H. Mathews (Patricia Whitney) of Brea and William S. Mathews (Bonnie Porter) of Los Angeles - along with six (6) grandchildren and three (3) great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18, at 1:00 pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1014 E. Altadena Dr., Altadena CA 91001. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to St. Mark's.

Memories and Condolences
for Charlotte MATHEWS

Not sure what to say?

I have fond childhood memories of Charlotte. My parents were friends with Charlotte and Jon in the 1960s. I spent a few afternoons at the Mathews house chasing lizards and such with their children. But she figured more prominently in my life for a couple of years as she recommended a piano teacher in Pasadena (Mr. Reichert) to my parents when they wanted me to start lessons. My mom and she managed to get my lesson right before that of one of her sons and she gave me a ride home in her Ford Mustang weekly for a good while. I have no idea what we talked about, but she was kind and humorous and drove a mean stick shift up the hill to Altadena! My belated condolences to her family.

We have so many happy memories of Charlotte. After my wedding to Jean, when Jon didn't show up to drive us away, Charlotte climbed in the driver's seat and away we went.

Charlotte was a gracious lady. I will never forget her kindness to me and my family, especially my children, when we lived in Pasadena. Rest In Peace, dear one.
