Dr. Gootnick delivered our first son, Matthew, on May 6, 1977. The doctor assisting him in the surgery--I had to have a C-section--said as he held Matt up for me to see for the first time: "Another one of Gene's miracles."

It was true. In the fall of 1975, Dr. Gootnick had done major abdominal surgery on me--I was 27 at the time--to remove some large ovarian cysts. Dr. Gootnick's successful surgery made it possible for my husband Warren and I to have children--Matt and his younger brother Eric. Both sons are "Gene's miracles."

In addition, in delivering Matt, Dr. Gootnick made my mother--one of his patients--and my father grandparents for the first time. He was my mother Lura Willon's gynecologist from the time my family moved to California in 1966. She thought the world of him.

I am happy that Dr. Gootnick had such a long and happy retirement in Palm Desert. He did a lot of good and helped a lot of people in his lifetime. Warren and I owe our family to his surgical skill and medical expertise. May Dr. Gootnick rest in peace and may his family find comfort in the fact that there are so many women, such as myself, and so many children, such as our sons, who remember him with gratitude beyond words.
