Natalie Magy Obituary

February 28, 1925 - November 19, 2017 Natalie was born to Rosalind and Jesse Herrmann in New York City, and was raised in Brooklyn and the Bronx. She graduated from Morris High School and then attended the nursing program at Fordham High School during World War II. She and her brother, Willie, were survivors of the urban deprivation of the Great Depression, growing up to be street smart and talented in many ways. Natalie told entertaining stories of being raised as latchkey children. They would spend their lunch money on penny candy. When older, she was chased by the local air raid warden for smoking cigarettes on the roof of their apartment building during a WW II mandatory blackout. As a young woman, she had occasions to use her hatpin to stab groping men on the crowded New York City subways. As a nursing student, she and her nursing cohorts and doctors raised money for an ambulance during the war and later they frequently took joyrides with it to the beach at Coney Island when the War had ended. In 1947, Natalie traveled to California via a long Greyhound bus ride to visit a recently married girlfriend, met the love of her life, Harvey, and married three months later; she never regretted this decision. After brief stints in Sacramento and the Central Valley where Harvey worked as an entomologist and Natalie at various tiny community hospitals, they settled in Montebello where Natalie lived for the following 66 years. Natalie attended East Los Angeles College (ELAC) and Cal State Los Angeles (CSLA), ultimately receiving her Master's degree in Nursing in 1976. Over the years, she worked at various hospitals, including Beverly Hospital, County Hospital, and the City of Hope. Later, as a nursing instructor at ELAC, she mentored many nurses who are active today and fondly remember her as a supportive teacher and a model of professionalism. During this time, Natalie also traveled extensively. She enjoyed different cultures and traveled to England, Greece, Israel, France, Japan, and was one of the early visitors to China in 1980. Natalie never fully recovered from the early death of her beloved husband, Harvey, in 1979, and spent much of her later life independent, with grace and dignity. Natalie was a bright woman who felt strongly about civil rights and women's rights. She loved See's Candies, Chinese food - any Chinese food, PBS, liberal causes, the LA Times, and anything in the colors orange or purple. Natalie was a great role model to her children and grandchildren, and is survived by her children, Martin (wife Sandra Brown), Ken, Jeffrey and Florence (husband Karl Matthews), and grandchildren, Daniel Magy, Kathleen Magy, Nicole Matthews, and Eric Matthews. The family now fondly includes her caretaker, Susie Cardenas. As with all loved ones, she will be greatly missed and not forgotten. Natalie's family truly believes that she has made her contribution to making the world a better place. Private family services were held at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations may be made in Natalie's name to the charity of your choice.
