So sad to see this and my heart goes out to Sgt Hoppe's family, friends and Peers. He was my Sgt in jrotc and helped guide me into being the US Marine that I am today. I was there for all 4 of my high school years and went to all the summer camps as well. He was someone I could always look up to and push myself to become more like. I do miss him and look back through those years often as they are the ones that really got me to grow and do more with my life.

MSgt Jerry Q. Hoppe was one of the biggest influences in my life. I was guided by what I knew and felt about him. My wife and I were his students from 1982 to 1987 at Canyon High School. When I graduated Air Force BMT, I called him before anyone else. While he was still at Canyon, I found myself visiting him as often as I could, still looking for some more of his wisdom and yes his approval. Early in my career, I followed in his footsteps and became an Air Force SP and now, I am an AFJROTC Instructor myself. It was important to me to take this step because I feel there is no better way to honor the memory of a great man then by emulating him in every way I can. I don't know what kind of father or husband he was, but I can only imagine that the years he dedicated to all of his students was hard on his family. He was, in my mind, a superman of sorts. Nothing would make me happier than to know that he approved of my decisions. He was and will remain my hero.
