Patricia Devine Obituary

February 1, 1925 - April 27, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce that the one-and-only Pat Devine passed away peacefully at home in Glendale, CA, her family by her side. The daughter of Charlie Devine and Genevieve Martin, Pat grew up in Montebello, CA. After graduating from high school, she worked for Western Union for several years before joining Western Airlines as a reservations agent in 1951. Pat spent the next 30 years at the airline, mostly at the Hollywood office, where she was Western's first female account executive, and at LAX, where she was Director of VIP Services. Known as "The Lady with The Hat" for her trademark sartorial touch, Pat's warmth, generosity, humor and professionalism endeared her to all her clients, many of whom became personal friends. Cary Grant, Merle Oberon, John Wayne, Joan Rivers, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Robert Redford are just a few of the notables for whom Pat's efforts made Western "the only way to fly." Pat retired from Western in 1981 and moved to Washington, D.C. after her old friend Ronald Regan offered her a job as Director of Special Services in the White House Travel Office. She had a grand old time in "the District" over the next decade, as her stint at the White House was followed by positions at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, the Department of the Interior (as Special Assistant to Judge William Clark), and on the Commision on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. To be closer to her family, she returned to California in 1991. Blessed with an adventurous spirt, Pat was an intrepid globe trotter whose travels took her across the United States, Europe and Latin America. She had a special fondness for the people and culture of Mexico and was always happy to meet for margaritas and Mariachis. "Si, como no?" she would often say with a laugh, and her many friends would undoubtedly agree that it summed up her attitude to life in general: always positive and pretty much up for anything. Pat was preceded in death by her siblings, Jack and Katie, and her ex-husband, George Nollinger. She is survived by her son, Mark Nollinger, her niece, Shannon Bradley, her daughter-in-law Sara Catania, and her grandchildren, Genevieve and Lucas. We are celebrating Pat's life with a memorial and reception at a private residence in Hollywood on June 11th at 4:30 pm. I had the great pleasure of working closely with Pat during her White House days. She was an incredible lady, and even though I was a twenty-something, we became fast friends. She was the most generous person I have ever met.. She took me to the Super Bowl where my Redskins played and won, a Liberace show with a personal greeting, and dinner at Cary Grants home, to name a few. She was truly Devine and will always have a special place in my heart.

I never had the pleasure of meeting her but any story about the successful life of a "Fellow Oiler" from Montebello High, is a highlight of my day and I have shared this with others - MHS '57
