October 22, 1927 - December 17, 2017 Tom A. Magness, 90, passed away as a result of congestive heart failure and arterial stenosis. After earning a Ph.D. in Mathematical Analysis from UCLA, he worked in aerospace for over 35 years at TRW, contributing to a significant Apollo mission and to the Strategic Defense Initiative. He retired in 1992. In 1961, Tom married Geneva Mier, with whom he had three children. They lived in San Pedro, CA, until they divorced in 1967. Later in 1967, Tom married Elaine Williams, with whom he had two children. Late in their retirement, the couple moved to Nipomo, CA, until Elaine's death to cancer in October of 2015. He lived out his last years in Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel, CA, with emotional support and care provided by his nearby children. An aficionado of opera and classical music, Tom was knowledgeable of many composers' styles. Though mostly introverted, he evinced a witty sense of humor, and is remembered for his generosity and affability. He is survived by five children-Eric, Tanya, Lisa, Scott, and Bryan-and five grandchildren. The family plans to celebrate his life October 2018, in Pismo Beach. The family requests remembrances be made in his name to the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

Such sad news. I was Tom & Elaine's neighbor at Mountain Shadows. I had no idea they were both gone. My condolences to their family.
