I was so blessed to have Richard as a mentor, for 2 years of Education for Ministry (EFM). His knowledge was encyclopedic, his passion for the culture and historical context of the Old Testament was as if the was the Indiana Jones of Theological studies. He bought books for us many times, always had book recommendations to bring to our attention, enriched classes by discussing linguistic challenges of translations, cultural bias and social context , legends and literature of the times. He inspired a passion for theological studies - I was delighted by the number of study Bibles that he introduced to us and were available. He had first person encounters with many authors that he shared as well. He was a gentle soul, generous with his time and talent. He had a delightful sense of humor. When he relocated from Laguna Beach and St George's, I missed him greatly. Several passages in the New Testament referred to Jesus as a shepherd, a gardener and teacher. Richard too was a shepherd - of students who sought knowledge of God in their lives; he was a master gardener planting and nurturing the love and study of the Bible. He followed Jesus example as a master teacher who dedicated his life to awakening the desire to learn in the people he met. (He also had a beautiful rose garden!)
Thank you Jesus for sharing Richard with us. He was a most remarkable and dedicated disciple.

Richard was a gentle man of honor and brilliance. After his retirement as Chancellor, he graciously took on the development and instruction of a Saddleback College Honors course on the Dead Sea Scrolls, blessing the classroom with his expertise, wisdom, and enthusiasm. The world is poorer for his absence, but richer for all he did in it.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. Please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many individuals who truly care about you. May the God who supplies endurance and comfort grant you peace. (Psalms 94:19)
