Helen Lanham Mays died at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, in her home in Lebanon surrounded by her loving family.
She was born April 21, 1933 at her childhood home on Logan in Gravel Switch. Helen and her husband, Smith Jr., were married on Dec. 26, 1950 and shared an amazing 70 years of marriage. She truly loved her family dearly, where her children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren could always be found.
Helen worked at Cowden Sewing Factory in Springfield for four years and Fruit Of The Loom for 30 years. After retiring from there she continue an active work life by working for the Marion County Board of Education at Glasscock Elementary School. She was admired by her great work ethics. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking and was admired by her great abilities of cooking and baking for her family, friends and church gatherings and for keeping an immaculate home and car. She also worked side by side with her husband on their farm.
Helen graduated from Lebanon High School in 1950. Was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Gravel Switch after the family moved she then became a faithful and active member of Mulraugh Hill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Helen walked in her life in great faith of her Lord and Savior.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Johnnie and Ethel Lanham; two brothers, Buron and Porter Lanham; a daughter, Gloria Mays Hill; a grandson, William Nicholas Hill; and a great-grandson, Luke Mattingly.
Survivors include: her devoted husband, Smith Mays Jr.; a son, David (Melody) Mays; a daughter, Janice Mays (Robertson); three brothers; one sister; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great- great-grandchildren; and a abundance of nieces and nephews and friends. She was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at Campbell-Fisher Funeral Home, Lebanon, with burial in New Market Cemetery.
