Columbus, Georgia - Sergeant Major, Clinton Edwards, Jr., U.S. Army Retired, 91, of Columbus, passed away quietly among family and friends on Monday, May 10, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Monday, May 17, 2021 at Sconiers Funeral Home Chapel, 836 5th Avenue, Columbus. Burial with full military honors will follow in Green Acres Cemetery. Pastor Michael Sherman will officiate. Visitation will be held Sunday from 12 P.M. to 2 P.M. at the funeral home. Mr. Edwards was born in Americus, GA, son of the late Clinton Edwards, Sr. and Berta Stallings Edwards. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Americus. He was a retired U.S. Army veteran and served as Band Leader at various military bases throughout the world, receiving numerous medals and commendations during his illustrious career. After retiring from the military, he worked in Public Safety for Muscogee County and West Central Georgia Regional Hospital and as a Bailiff for the Sheriff's Department. He was also a 33 Degree Mason of Prince Hall. He was a musician and enjoyed singing, playing the saxophone and listening to his favorites by John Coltrane.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his survivors include: his loving wife of almost 67 years, Vivian Bailey Edwards; two daughters, Margarethe Edwards Copeland and Valerie Edwards Richardson (Benjamin); two grandchildren, Kara Copeland and Justin Richardson; one great-grandchild, Kiori English; one God-son, Gerald Caldwell and a host of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
