Robert Schley Obituary

Dr. Robert Sommerville
Schley
May, 16 1961-
August 9, 2018
Columbus, Georgia- Dr. Robert Sommerville Schley, beloved son and brother, died quietly at his home, St. Elmo, early this morning. Robert, better known as "Beau" was born on the 16th of May 1961 at RAF Station Bentwaters in Suffolk, England. He returned to America with his family. He matriculated at St. Elmo Elementary school. After St. Elmo, he attended Richards Middle School and Columbus High School. During high school, he became a devoted Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Episcopal High School where he was an outstanding track athlete. During the summers, he worked at Disney World where, one summer, he was named Employee of the Month. He picked up an appreciation for the Spanish language while working in South Florida and became fluent. Beau began his college career at Vanderbilt but soon transferred to the University of Georgia. He completed his pre-med years there and went to medical school in Monterey, Mexico. By a happy set of circumstances, he transferred to medical school at Emory University, where he graduated in 1988. Having elected to be a surgeon (a nod, no doubt, to his father), he began his training in the surgery department at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. After two years, he realized he had more in common with the men at the head of the table, the anesthesiologists, than the men doing the surgery. He switched programs and completed his residency. He practiced for several years in Fort Lauderdale, and when a position opened at Doctor's Hospital, he came home to Columbus. Beau had a remarkable rapport with his patients. Countless numbers of them have reported back to the family how important his place in the healthcare picture was to them.
For many years, Beau wrestled with a problem of alcohol abuse. He affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous and was particularly active in a local chapter of Physicians with Alcoholism. Some of his closest associates have come forward to volunteer descriptions of his effectiveness in helping his brethren with the disease. Beau is survived by his father and two sisters, Georgia Schley Ritchie (Diff) and Margot Hightower Schley as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a 10:00 am graveside service at Linwood Cemetery Saturday August 11, 2018 with father Tim Graham officiating.

I remember running track at EHS with Beau. He was a good friend, a fierce competitor, and a great teammate. He will be missed among the old boys of his 1980 class, and as customary, remembered at the next reunion.

Please accept our condolences from all of the 1980 EHS Old Boys.

I'm so sorry to hear of Beau's passing. When I visited Columbus in my teens, I remember him as a laughing, tow headed little boy running around the backyard playing chase with his siblings. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. How wonderful he was able to practice medicine, and be helpful and a source of comfort, to others who were sick and suffering. That is a life well lived. Love, Cousin Carol Elliott
