Barbara Joan Bodnar

Stony Point - Barbara Joan Bodnar of Stony Point, New York passed away at home on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at the age of 77, surrounded by her close family after a brief illness with cancer. Barbara was born to Joan and Jack Woods on February 13, 1943 in Kankakee, IL. She was raised in Manhattan and graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing in 1963 and continued her education earning a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing from Dominican College in 1980 and a Master's of Science in Nursing from Hunter College in 1983. Barbara worked at Bellevue Hospital in the early sixties and after moving to Rockland County was employed at Nyack Hospital for 15 years. In 1983 she joined the staff at Westchester Medical Center as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and was Deputy Director of the Medical-Surgical Department during the last eight years of her career. Barbara married James (Jim) in 1964 in NYC at St. Paul the Apostle Church and moved to West Haverstraw in December of 1966 where they raised their children Lisa and John. They were married for 52 years. Barbara is survived by her daughter Lisa Naughton and husband Kevin, and grandchildren Liam and Aileen of Suffern, NY, son John Bodnar and wife Robin and grandchildren Delaney and Andrew, step grandchildren; Samantha, Cadan, and Juliana of Williamsport, MD. She was a loving sister to her brother John Woods of Pearl River, NY and sister Nora Naughton and husband Michael of Parrish, Florida. She is also survived by several nieces, cousins and many close friends. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Jim, her nephew James Woods and her sister- in- law Joyce Woods. Barbara and Jim enjoyed dancing, traveling to Europe and attending celebrations with family and friends. She also took many trips across the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. A favorite winter retreat was the Island of St. Martin. Upon retirement Barbara began scrapbooking and made many albums for family members. She also resumed knitting and crocheting and her grandchildren were the recipients of those homemade projects, Barbara also pursued painting classes at North Rockland High School and with a private artist learning the techniques of acrylic and watercolors. Barbara entertained her friends and family with her incredible gift of storytelling. She loved spending time with family and friends and spending time with her grandkids at Long Beach Island, Bethany Beach and Disney World. She had a tremendous capacity to comfort and care for others and was an active member of St Peter's and St Mary's Church in Haverstraw, NY. Barbara and Jim worked for the food pantry and she later served as a lector. Barbara was a very loving and caring mother , grandmother , sister , friend and neighbor, She will be greatly missed by the many lives she has touched throughout her life. The family wishes to express thanks to the staff at Good Samaritan Hospital and the staff at United Hospice of Rockland. Due to the ongoing health crisis the family will hold a private funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to American Autism Association or St Peter's and St. Mary's Church of Haverstraw.

Barbara was a wonderful friend and neighbor with whom I shared many a laugh. She was a friend whom you could trust and share with your thoughts , concerns and everything. I am sure she is in heaven with Jim and they are dancing up a storm. i will miss her greatly.
