Nyack - Jane Schiowitz
The eye is meant to see things.
The soul is here for its own joy.
Jaladine Rumi
After a courageous and dignified struggle, Jane Schiowitz, of Nyack, NY, succumbed to brain cancer on October 3. Her bereft family thanks her dear friends and the entire community of Nyack for their sustained help and support throughout her illness.
Jane was a devoted wife and mother. She was a fixture at her son Julian's basketball, soccer, and baseball games. An avid reader and gifted story-teller with an enviable sense of humor, she was also famous in Nyack for her chocolate chip cake and for vanquishing many an opponent at tennis and Scrabble. Jane loved spending time with her many and varied friends.
A graduate of Wyoming Seminary (Wilkes-Barre, PA), and the University of Virginia, Jane went on to study at the School of Visual Arts and later received a Master of Fine Arts from Bard College. An accomplished abstract painter, she exhibited at Elizabeth Harris Gallery in New York City for many years and her work is in many private collections.
Truly a painter's painter, Jane pursued her art to the end with unwavering devotion and commitment, culminating in an exquisite series of black and white canvases prized for their refined and spontaneous calligraphic gestures. Jane described her artwork best:
Rather than start from a preconceived idea, I discover the structure of each painting, working and reworking its elements. My decisions can be carefully considered or highly intuitive. This give and take is integral to my process: it determines the ultimate form of each piece and results in work that is formal yet expressive, restrained yet personal.
An elegant outgrowth of her painting was jewelry. She made extraordinary hand-crafted earrings, necklaces and bracelets appreciated for their understated simple elegance.
Jane was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Dr. Albert and Jean F. Schiowitz. She was the granddaughter of the late Nan and Mose Fuerth and the late Mollie and Morris Schiowitz. She is survived by her husband Richard Brooks, and son, Julian, of Nyack; mother, Jean, Kingston; sister, Dr. Nan Schiowitz and husband Michael Stemmer, of Philadelphia; brother, Dr. Robert Schiowitz and wife Dr. Ronit Sugar, of Philadelphia; and brother Dr. Mark Schiowitz and wife Therese Schiowitz, of Wilkes-Barre.
Donations in remembrance of Jane can be sent to: Nyack Red and Black Club, PO Box 364, Nyack, NY 10960, in support of their efforts to provide scholarships and additional support for Nyack Public School's student athletes.

Jane, I've been having so many dreams about you lately. In one, someone is admiring the earring I'm wearing, one of yours that I wear every day. They touch it and when I tell them my friend made it, they say that it is more valuable than any of the others they've seen, the expensive, glittery ones from Tiffany. I say, "I know," and waken to your precious memory. I miss you so much, Jane!
Love,
Hester

Jane was my best friend in grade school. Most all of my good memories of those years involved Jane. Though I was Catholic and she was Jewish, we shared our lives and families all the time. So many memories. From singing all the Carole King Tapestry songs in a silly way on a recorder( which I still have), shopping Downtown W-B, Sleepovers, and so much more. I can still sing a song she made up about Prunes (she didn't like them). I always thought I would see Jane again. Not thought, vowed. Unfortunately that will not be until the next life. But she will ALWAYS be a part of who I am and I am eternally grateful for that. Much love to Jane's family. Thank You for sharing her.

Jane, you were adorable, gifted, and wicked funny. I miss our breakfasts at midtown's Flame Diner, where you squeezed in a precious hour before your job and we flamed with giggles and silliness and wild conversations about art and life. There was no one like you, my wonderful friend, and I miss you so much and love you forever.

I worked with Jane at Dreyfus. We shared many laughs, fun times and train rides to and from the Tarrytown train station.
She had a great sense of humor and was so creative and knowledgeable about designing effective marketing tools.
She loved her family and was such a proud mom, sharing all of Julian's accomplishments.
I will always remember the fun times that we shared together and will miss her. Rest In Peace Jane.

My deepest sympathies to the Brooks and Schiowitz families. Jane and I worked together at Dreyfus in NYC for 5 years. She was an amazing woman, wonderful friend, a talented artist and a devoted wife and mother. Jane was a great listener and always there to offer her advice whenever I needed it no matter what it was. I miss our morning talks about anything and everything. I'll miss her wit, her sense of humor, her laugh and that infectious smile. May she rest in peace and watch over her family and all of us always. I'll see you on the other side my old friend.

I cherish so many woderful memories of the years and times spent with my dear friend, Jane. We were the best of friends through school, sharing so many experiences and great times together and with our other pals Lisa, Jean and Joan. We all also shared the love of art and began our life ventures in pursuit of an artistic career, with Jane certainly excelling in her craft. I have so many memories that I hold dear with one of the strongest being the times spent at the Schiowitz home and the witnessing of a family bond that was extraordinary. Jane's bond with her parents and with Mark, Bert and Nan and the love they had for each other was a privilege to be a part of in times spent with them all. I always felt so welcomed. We shared terrific meals...laughing...swimming...story telling...just hanging out together...and the best chocolate chip cake recipe that I still make to this day! My friendship and times with Jane and with her family had a profound, positive impact on my life, for which I will forever be thankful. Jane has always held a special place in my heart...a place that will always remain. Rest now my dear friend...
Love to you all....
