I knew Lionel from our days running track and cross country at Lehman College. He was the captain of our squad and a great leader he was ! He pursued the school record for the 440, finally breaking the 50 second barrier near the end of his senior year. We were so happy for him, his 49.7 was the culmination of 4 years of gut-busting running. He was the anchorman for our mile relay and always gave his all. Lionel was friendly, enthusiastic and talented. On our way to the Penn Relays in 1971 we met a homeless woman at Penn Station. Lionel smiled at her , talked with her a few minutes and gave her some money. She beamed a toothless smile and said " God Bless your greasy soul ". We told and retold that story for years. I trust that Lionel shared his happiness , enthusiasm and his gifts with his family. May he rest in peace.

I will miss our conversations and his smile. I will especially miss the soup he made for me every year during my tax season for he knew I did not have time to cook.RIP
