Drew, O.F.M.Cap., Fr. Andrew V.

The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Province of St. Mary mourn the death of Rev. Fr. Andrew V. Drew, O.F.M. Cap. who died at Cabrini of Westchester, 15 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522 on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the age of 88. Fr. Andrew was born [one of the six children] of William J. Drew and Rose Marie McCann on January 17, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY. Father attended P.S. 127 Grade School, Brooklyn, NY [1935-1941]; St. Gregory Grade School, Brooklyn, NY [1941-1943]; St. John, Brooklyn, NY [1943-1947]; St. John's University, Queens NY [1947-1949]. Prior to entering religious life, Fr. Andrew worked at The Brooklyn Eagle [circulation branch] and served as a Corporal in the US Army, leaving active duty in 1952. He entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order on August 31, 1954 and pronounced perpetual vows on September 1, 1958. He continued his college studies at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY [1955-56] and at St. Anthony Friary, Hudson, NH [1956-58]. Fr. Andrew studied theology at Mary Immaculate Friary, Garrison, NY [1958-1962]. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1961 at Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, Yonkers, NY.

Following his ordination, he ministered as a parish assistant at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, NY [1962-63].

For the next nine years Father studied the Japanese language and served as a missionary in the Ryukyu Islands as a parish priest [1963-72]and would later return to Naha, Okinawa [1975-78]. Fr. Andrew served as an Associate Director of the Propagation of Faith [1972-1974] residing at Our Lady of Sorrows, NYC, and a parochial assistant at St. John the Baptist Church, New York City [1974-75]. Father ministered as a hospital chaplain at Westchester Medical Center [1978-1984] and at Norwich Hospital with residence at St. Joseph Church, Norwich CT [1984-1991]. He also served as a chapel assistant at St. Francis Friary, Springfield, MA [1991-2000]. At the age of 71 Father continued his priestly ministry at St. John the Baptist, NYC [2000-06]; parochial assistance with residence at St. Conrad Friary, White Plains, NY [2006-2008]; and priestly assistance as a senior friar with residence at St. Clare Friary, Yonkers, NY [2008-2015]. Father began his residency at Cabrini Nursing Home, Dobbs Ferry, NY on June 1, 2015 and remained until the day of his death.

Father Andrew was survived by his godmother, Sister Edward Joseph, C.S.J. [103]; his niece and her husband Mrs. Regina Bruder [husband, Robert] Staten Island/Florida; his niece and her husband Mrs. Barbara Saur [husband, James]of Bayside, NY, his niece Ms. Regina Wagner of Merrick, NY; his nephew Charles Drew and his wife Gina. The wake will be at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers, NY 10703 on Friday, September 15, 2017 with viewing hours 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703. In lieu of flowers, kindly offer your Fr. Andrew Drew, O.F.M. Cap. Memorial Donations to the Capuchin Franciscan Development Office, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703-2226 to continue the care of our senior friars.

I will always remember the day of your Ordination and then many years later your return from Okinawa, Japan. Although I didn't have many opportunities to spend time with you, those times I had have been etched lovingly in my mind.

I know you are now with our father in heaven and all those of our family who have gone before. I may no longer have your prayers here on earth but, I know I have your protection and love from above. Give hugs and kisses to my parents and siblings.
