James "Jim" Benton
Lubbock - Graveside services for James "Jim" Benton, age 88, of Lubbock, will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 21 at the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Jim was a true gentleman throughout his entire life and, true to form, he passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 17. Friends are invited to join the family at the graveside service or you are welcome to celebrate his life by visiting www.sandersfuneralhome.com.
Jim was born April 1, 1933 in Slaton, TX to James and LaVerne Benton. Upon graduation from Lubbock High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and was a proud Seabee, serving in the Philippines and Guam throughout the Korean War. After his military service, he worked in the family business for a few years, then spent 28 years at Texas Tech, before retiring in 1991.
On December 29, 1952, Jim married the love of his life, Evelyn Smith and together, they set out on a 62 year adventure, until her death in 2014. From the window screen of their "Pop-Up" camper, to the windshield of their Motorhome, Jim and Evelyn marveled at the beauty and glory of nature, as they traveled the country with family and friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn and daughter, Nita of Lubbock and sister, Fran Schuler of McMinnville Oregon. He is survived by his daughter, Tina Gibson and husband Jeff of Lubbock, Betty Benton of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Jack Freeman of Peyton, Colorado.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Covenant Hospital, Beyond Faith Hospice and The Beehive Assisted Living Home. Their love and care during Jim's final days made his final journey pleasant and peaceful.
Memorials are suggested to Beyond Faith Hospice, The Beehive or your favorite charity.
