I was thinking of Faulkner and of course, thought of you, looked for you. I am so saddened that this is the fruit of my search. What a huge influence you had on my life as English teacher, faculty adviser, Headmaster and steadfast friend. You encouraged my art, slowed my headlong rush, and helped me plot my finest rebellion. I truly can not envision who I would have been had it not been for your support and guidance. Thank you forever for that.

I am very sorry to hear the sad news about Mr. Hare (he was always Mr. Hare to me)---I vividly and fondly remember him. I attended the Latin School of Chicago from 1965-1968, and Mr. Hare was one of my English teachers. He and I also acted in the school play The Heiress. I played the young roue with designs on the heiress; he played the heiress's stern, suspicious, disapproving father. What a cool guy Mr. Hare was to do that, in addition to his heavy teaching and administrative responsibilities---we both had to memorize a lot of lines and rehearse and perform a number of times. And in reality, I was 17 at the time, and Mr. Hare was 29---it was hilarious! I would die to have a recording of Mr. Hare and I performing together, but I don't. I was perhaps one of the most dubious applicants ever to seek admission to Harvard College, yet Mr. Hare wrote me a letter of recommendation, and I was admitted. He let me get away with far more than he should have. I saw Mr. Hare only two or three times at Latin after 1968, and we had good visits each occasion. I so regret not having stayed in touch with Mr. Hare during the subsequent decades. I have learned of his additional brilliant careers in the military, secondary education, and in the legal profession; and of his very distinguished ancestry (which he never talked about at Latin) and loving family, whom I most sincerely, gratefully, and emphatically wish to thank for sharing this great man with us.

I was a student at the Latin School of Chicago during Mr. Hare's time there and to this day, I think he was one the finest teachers I ever had. He was rigorous, kind, funny, and supremely gifted at engaging all types of angst-ridden teenagers as they navigated through Thoreau and Faulkner. My sincere condolences to his family.
