Donald Bacin Obituary

Donald P. Bacin

Mansfield - Donald P. Bacin, 92, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Country Meadows Care Center following an extended illness.

The son of William & Agnes (Seveyka) Bacin, Donald was born April 14, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio. He began working for GE at age 16, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving as a gunner and radioman on dive bombers. While his group was never deployed to the war zone in that role, he spent the remainder of the war working stateside, predominantly as a crash and rescue firemen at various naval air stations. When he returned to civilian life, he went back to work for GE, initially in Cleveland and then Columbus, before being transferred to Mansfield in 1972 and retiring in 1985.

Donald loved nature and the outdoors, sharing the experience with his 4 sons through Boy Scouts and then started walking regularly over 50 years ago, when the family lived on Steam Corners Road in Lexington. When Don and his wife moved to Cook Road, he continued walking via a different route and area residents began to recognize him as "the Cook Road walker", a friendly wave was always extended to those driving by. He was very proud of the fact that he could (up until several months ago) accomplish 25 sit ups and 25 push-ups every day - not the kind done leaning against a wall, but military style "on the floor." Through his life he had a ton of adventures, traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, France, Ireland, Russia, and Czechoslovakia. And one very memorable 'short' trip he and his wife took, on his 80th birthday, up in a balloon! Donald has made news stories over the years for giving over 30 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. Also participating in the Richland County, March of Dimes Walk a thon, including when it was an 18 mile event.

Donald married Sylvia (Venglarchik) May 29, 1948, and they just celebrated 70 years of marriage this past May, who survives him. He also has 5 children, Donna (Larry) Smolen of Lancaster, California; Mark

(Linda) Bacin of Arlington, Virginia; Brian (Chris) Bacin of Galion, Ohio; Keith (Suzie) Bacin of Lexington, Ohio; and Jeffrey Bacin (deceased). 4 grandchildren; Brian (Meghan) Bacin, Chrystal (Josh) Christopher, Courtney (Drew) Lessick, Kelsey (Jeremy) Rider. 7 Great grandchildren; Wil Bacin, Chloe Bacin, Liam Rider, Joel Christopher, Caleb Christopher, Jessa Christopher, and Cora Christopher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son; Jeffrey, and 3 brothers; Bill, Ed, and Kent Bacin.

Per Donald's request, there will be no calling hours. His family hopes that you will remember him as he was...full of life, love for his family, friends, and his many accomplishments. A Celebration of Donald's life will be held on August 25th with details to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Life Line of Ohio/Donate Life, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice.
