Harold Pfeifer Obituary

Harold E. Pfeifer

MARION: Harold E. Pfeifer, age 91, of Marion and formerly of Mount Gilead, died Sunday morning, March 30, 2014, at the Marion General Hospital following a brief illness.

On September 5, 1922, Harold was born in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, one of seven children of the late Julius and Mary Catherine (Krock) Pfeifer. While growing up, he told his parents that he wanted to be an auctioneer. They told him they could not afford to send him to school, so he worked to save up $10.00 to buy a book on being an auctioneer and the rest was history.

For over 62 years, Harold lived his dream of being an auctioneer. For 32 of those years, he auctioned five plus days a week with Producers Livestock; going on Mondays to Columbus, Tuesdays to Washington Courthouse, Wednesdays Mount Vernon, Thursdays to Chillicothe, Fridays to Coshocton, and many Saturdays he would hold household or farm sales. He also auctioneered for several county fairs, including the Ohio State Fair where he ran the Sale of Champions under the Four Governors. Lastly, he retired as a greeter at Kroger's in Mount Gilead.

Having the gift of gab, Harold never knew a stranger and he always had a good story or joke to tell you. He was a man of much faith, teaching Sunday School for many years. He also was a faithful Gideon and participated in the jail ministry.

When Harold wasn't auctioneering, his second love was fishing, which he loved to do with his pal Ron. He will be sadly missed by his entire family, and many dear friends. A chapter on a legend is now closed.

Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Jeff Pfeifer, Virginia Pfeifer, and Janice Pfeifer, all of Winona Lake, IN; three step-children: Carol (Julie) Pecko of Fort Myers, FL, Barb (Max) Weise of Cardington, and Linda Cain of Mount Gilead; three grandchildren: Tim (Sharon) Weise, Peg (Bill) Griffin, and Mandy (Ian) Cross; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews; and by his former wife, Evelyn Pfeifer of Winona Lake, IN.

Including his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Margaret (Crawford) Pecko Pfeifer; two brothers: Lewis and David Pfeifer; and four sisters: Luella Strain, Helen Eschbach, Mary Pfeifer and Carol Hawkins.

His family will greet friends from 1 - 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 3rd, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring his life will follow there at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Dennis Wittenberger officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Schoenberger Cemetery in Upper Sandusky.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon's International, P. O. Box 204, Mount Gilead, OH 43338.
