Leonard M. Grundstrom, 81, of Hampden passed away at his home on May 19th. He was born in Springfield on December 4th 1938 to the late Elmer and Maureen Grundstrom. Leonard proudly served the city of Springfield for 39 years as a dedicated firefighter, retiring as a captain. He also was an acting Constable for the Amherst Police Department until 2018. Leonard will always be remembered as everyone’s friend. He would joke about how he was “Lovable Len, the firefighters friend”. A perfect fit for a man who was friends with everyone, and a man who would always make sure you were loved and taken care of. He could also be found taking studious care of his lawn and meticulous care of his car. In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his siblings Alan Grundstrom, and Annette Caron. He will forever be missed by his loving family including his beloved wife of 54 years, Margaret Grundstrom; his son Jason Grundstrom; daughters Lisa Tinnirella of Greenbrae, CA and Dena Grundstrom of Springfield. He also leaves his sister Carolyn Johnson of Northborough, MA; his grandchildren Ashley Assad, Gavin Lessard, and Luke Lessard III; his great grandson Jayden Grundstrom; as well as a dear friend of many years, William Wilson. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Leonard’s life with a period of visitation from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, May 26th at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd in Springfield. Due to current circumstances, a maximum of 10 visitors will be allowed in at a time to provide proper social distancing, with a mask being required of all visitors. A funeral home service will follow at 11am on Wednesday the 27th. Burial will then follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Sister Caritas Cancer Center, Patient Services Fund- 271 Carew St. Springfield, MA 01104.

I will miss our conversations at the gym. Many good stories.
More importantly, when I asked your advice several years ago about how to handle a problem with a coworker you sprang into action. You knew just what to do and this person is now enjoying a successful career in the fire service. You're a good man Lenny and will be missed by many.

lenny, a firefighters firefighter. Few knew the sacrifices you made for your city because as a firefighter thats what you did. I met you through my father who said, dont believe all the stories then he laughed and said its a good read. A hard worker yes, but you knew how to make your team laugh when needed. Through all the years Ive Known you and been able to call you a friend now may you Rest In Peace.

My heartfelt sympathy to the entire Grundstrom family at this time. Having known Lenny since I was a teenager growing up in 16 acres, he was truly a great guy. I was reacquainted with him during my police career which were even better years to work around him at various scenes. Lenny's sense of humor helped many through dangerous and stressful events while remaining professional. He was a true friend to anyone in need, and was very proud of his family. I'll miss him immensely, but will be comforted by the many funny stories we shared over the years. Rest in peace my friend, Godspeed Captain Grundstrom until we meet again.
