Max Goldberg, son of Jeffrey and Elisa Goldberg of Longmeadow, died unexpectedly on February 18th, four days after his 21st birthday. A loving son, brother, grandchild, nephew, cousin and friend, it was only fitting that he was born on Valentine’s Day. Throughout his short life, Max brought his sweet, innocent smile into the world, sharing his love with whomever he came in contact, whether at home, at school or at camp – except on the soccer and lacrosse fields, where his determination and speed made him a fierce competitor, while his kindness and sensitivity towards others made him a supportive teammate.

Max attended Blueberry Hill, Curtis Blake and the Eagle Hill School in Hardwick, MA, where he played soccer and lacrosse, graduating in June, 2019. He also attended hebrew school at Beth El Temple in Springfield, where he and his family celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. In September, 2019, Max entered Mitchell College in New London, CT, where he continued to play lacrosse.

Max will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched but none more than his parents, his brother, Joshua, his paternal grandparents, Roberta and Ellis Goldberg, his maternal grandparents, Zelda and Herb Baron, Aunt Debra Sloan and her husband Phil, Uncle Andy Goldberg, Uncle Jeffrey Baron and his wife Melanie, and cousins Ali, Amelia, Jessie and Aaron and other family members. Max’s family is eternally grateful for the friendship of Robert Campbell, Max’s college roommate.
A private graveside funeral for Max will be held on Sunday, February 21 at Beth El Cemetary in West Springfield.
The Goldberg family has requested that donations in Max’s honor be made to the Epilepsy Foundation Faces http://faces.med.nyu.edu. The Ascher-Zimmerman funeral home is assisting the family.

I wanted to send my condolences to Max’s family. I had Max last fall in my technology class at Mitchell. Although it was totally online I got to know him and his love of music! He and Robert created a capstone project all about their favorite music and their podcast was really entertaining! Rest In Peace Max.

There are just no words to adequately express our sympathy. It is well over twenty years since we moved from Randolph and as such never had the pleasure to meet Max. However, his obituary surely described the wonderful young man he was and feel cheated that we were not able to meet him. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. May Max be for a blessing.

I am a parent of a Mitchell College Student, and my daughter, Emma knew Max. I want to say how sorry I am for your loss. It is so hard being a parent, especially of one with special needs. We do so much our children can have every opportunity, it is very difficult, and only parents who have similar struggles can say you did everything possible. May his memory be a blessing. I know Emma said his was very nice.sending you strength to get through the next few days, weeks and months ahead❤

I would just like to say what a bright light Max was for our son Bobby. As someone who lives in a town that can sometimes be hard socially and had a very difficult high school experiencing uncontrollable seizures and multiple med changes, Bobby never had a friend who was there for him or that he enjoyed spending time with quite the way he did with Max. They truly enjoyed each other and Bobby relishes every memory and plans to honor those memories with action. He has truly appreciated all the outreach from your family during this unimaginable time for you. We are here for you, just as Max was for Bobby.

With love,

Max was one of the few people in my life who would always see what I’m up to, check in, and give advice to me. He’d talk to me for any amount of time and he will always be one of the most pure and genuine souls I know. I’m eternally thankful to have had him impact my life, and gotten closer to him half way through my senior year at Eagle Hill and in the summer (before I almost went to the same college as him, which he told me he was so excited for). Things change so fast, it especially reminds us to tell people you miss, appreciate and/or love them. Max was a prolific thinker, caring, open minded, and pursuant; dedicated with what he was doing whether it was sports, focusing on his studies or talking to people. I wish I could thank him for how supportive he was in my decisions but I also want to thank you all for making him part of who he was. My deepest condolences for your loss.

Every morning, 5 days a week, Max would come to see the nurse (my husband whom I always sat next to) at the school. And every morning, I always got a “good morning” followed by that heartwarming smile of his. How did he that so effortlessly is beyond me. But what I do know is that it would start my day off being a much happier person. And if he had a teacher absent (I was the sub), he would greet me again and with that same smile. Always kind, always respectful with a keen sense of humor that he delighted in when you least expected it. The world needs more like him in it. He will be missed.

Max showed everyone that you did not have to have a loud voice to lead with big impact. He was my (and I imagine most faculty’s) go-to person when a younger student needed a lift. Reliable, kind, and willing to go to any length to let someone know they were cared for, Max’s selflessness was to be admired by all.

Max always looked out for them, sharing many laughs over lunch or encouraging them while shooting hoops, and was determined to help them to enjoy their summers.
