Reverend Daniel P. Cipar, age 81, died at Windsor House at Liberty Health Care, Liberty, Ohio on February 2, 2018. He was a retired priest of the Diocese of Youngstown. Born in Reading Pennsylvania on February 4, 1936, Father Cipar was the son of the late Sophie (Tinus) Cipar and John Cipar. He graduated from SS Cyril & Methodius School in Reading prior to entering the Sacred Heart Mission Seminary in Geneva, Illinois. He completed high school and one year of college before transferring to the former Sacred Heart Novitiate on Logan Way in Youngstown. He completed his studies for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Seminary in Shelby, Ohio making vows in 1958 as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart. Father Cipar was ordained May 27, 1961, by The Most Reverend George Rehring, D.D., in Toledo, Ohio. His first solemn Mass was held June 4, 1961 at the church he grew up in, SS Cyril & Methodius Church, Sixth and Laurel Sts. Reading, Pennsylvania. Following ordination, Father Cipar studied at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa; Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois; Aurora College, Aurora, Illinois, and DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois, earning a bachelor of arts and master of divinity degrees from the latter. He then served as parochial vicar at Holy Cross in Batavia, Illinois. In 1980, he began two years of study at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana where he served as associate rector while earning a master's degree in Liturgical Studies. He then served as pastor of Holy Family in Nazareth, Pennsylvania where he built a large addition to the parish school, instituted a parish council and was president of the local ecumenical ministerial association. His favorite ministry was helping to form future Catholic leaders by challenging them both spiritually and intellectually and encouraging them to be passionately Catholic. To that end, he spent time in sabbatical studies at Boston College, Boston and then served as the chaplain at the Newman Center at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. In 1993, Father Cipar came to the Diocese of Youngstown as a Missionary of the Sacred Heart Religious Priest. He was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in East Palestine in 1993 where he remained until his retirement in 2010. While serving as pastor of our Lady of Lourdes Parish Father Cipar was incardinated into the Diocese of Youngstown as a diocesan priest in 2002. Father Cipar served as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Council 1890 for many years, as a member of Priests' Personnel Board, Priests' Council and the Priests' Retirement Board. In 2011, he celebrated his Golden Jubilee at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, Reading, Pennsylvania surrounded by family and friends. His love, care and kindness spread throughout many wonderful families, friends and relatives because of his love for the Lord. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Joseph Cipar. Father Cipar is survived by his sister-in-law, Dolores Cipar, Reading Pennsylvania; his niece Paula (Cipar) Barron and her husband William Barron also of Reading; a nephew David Cipar of St. Petersburg, Florida and two great-nieces Lauren and Kristen Barron. Services: Funeral Services will be Friday, February 9th at 11:00 a.m. Holy Family Church, 410 W. Center St., Nazareth, PA. Family and friends may call Friday 10 - 11:00 a.m. in the church. Burial will follow in the Holy Family Parish Cemetery. Online condolences may be submitted to www.reichelfuneralhome.com. Farewell to a great priest and faithful friend. So many wonderful memories for me and the Moses family from officiating at Peggy and my wedding to celebrating the funeral Mass for our Dad, who first dubbed you, me, and Joe McKnight the three Musketeers. Your presence was always a blessing and a delight.
