Memories and Condolences
for Mark Bonshak

Sponsored by Gilbert Funeral Home.

Not sure what to say?

Bonshak family, we recently learned of Mark's passing so please accept our late condolences on the loss of your beloved "Bommer"! We are so very sorry!

While I haven't seen "Bommer" in 32 years, my memories of him are forever ingrained in me. As a freshman catcher for the Bloomsburg Huskies in the fall of '83, Bommer took me under his wings and showed me the Husky way. When I decided not to return to the team after the '85 season, Bommer continued to treat me as one of his teammates and baseball brothers, which I will always remember!

Ironically, we had planned to go to the Navy/Lehigh baseball games on April 14 in Annapolis to see our son, a Midshipman, but due to illness, we were not able to travel.

When I checked the scores from home and I saw a Bonshak on Lehigh's roster, I knew it had to be Bommer and Peach's son. After checking Lehigh's baseball website, I soon realized that it was in fact their son, and became quite disappointed that I missed an opportunity to see a teammate that I have not seen in 32 years.

Yesterday, we received the latest issue of our Bloomsburg Alumni magazine and unfortunately saw his name in the obituary and our hearts sunk in our chests.

Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers!

I know that Bommer is on the greatest baseball diamond in Heaven with his catcher's gear on now, calling a great game for his pitcher!

Bonshak Family

My name is Art Murnane and I started at FedEx with Mark. He would always kid me from being from New York. We had a great group of guys and gals that started with FedEx in Memphis back in '2000. Mark had a very dry sense of humor and made most people laugh at their expense. He was a big Irish football fan so we bonded very quickly.

His family came out in many conversations and you could tell it was very important to him. I will miss him and think of him often. I just only found out of Mark's passing today. (6/6/2018)

It was a pleasure to meet and befriend Mark.

My deep regards,

Dear Bonshak Family:
I do not know Mark's family personally, but I am an alumna of Whitehall High School, class of 1986. Mark was older, but EVERYONE knew who he was! Mark grew up a few blocks from my family, and it would be an exciting occasion when me and my friends would see him in his yard, or at Jefferson park. He was a celebrity at Whitehall, and rightly so. He was a phenomenal athlete and I do believe he changed sports forever at Whitehall. While I was not in Mark's circle of friends, I do feel that all of our Whitehall/Fullerton community shared a special closeness and respected each other. My deepest sympathies to his dear family and pray to God to keep them safe in his love.

Dear Bonshak family,
It breaks my heart to see you go through the loss of your dear father so early in his life and in yours. I only met him once or twice, but I always knew both of your parents were amazing because you guys are all such wonderful people. Hold onto each other, as your father so well prepared you to do. Lean on your God - through Him all things are possible. Love you guys. I share your sadness and feelings of great loss, and have infinite faith in your strength and fortitude going forward. Blessings.

I got to know Mark when I started as a new hire at Overhead Door Company of Allentown 20 Years ago. He was so kind and welcoming right from the start. I had just been through a rough time and was generally pretty skittish about people in general. Mark helped to restore my belief that there really were nice, trustworthy, and genuine people left in the world. If Mark said he would then he did...every time. The fact that hundreds of people were willing to stand outside in the bitter cold and wait for the opportunity to pay their respects speaks volumes to me about the man Mark Bonshak was. Gods peace to all of you.

To the Bonshak family,
I worked with Mark for over 15 years and we use to go to lunch almost daily. He shared a lot about his family and the sports , especially wrestling . Mark and I were in the same office and use to vent together about things not going right with the job and customers. He was always smiling and had a great outlook on things. I am going to miss him as he was a wonderful man. God bless you all.

My deepest sympathy to Picci, the Bonshak children, Mr. and Mrs. Bonshak, Mark's siblings and extended family. My and my family's thoughts and prayers are with you all during this incredibly difficult time.

As a husband and father, Mark was clearly devoted to his family. The academic and athletic success of his and Picci's children is proof of his involvement, guidance and overall importance in their lives. He must be so proud of them and they are fortunate to have him as their father.

As an athlete, Mark's quiet confidence, determination, commitment and hard work was an inspiration to all who played with and against him. A tenacious competitor, he always played hard but at the same time respected the game, his teammates and his opponents.

As a mentor and coach to a new generation of young athletes, Mark made a positive impact on the lives of the many juniors he coached, teaching them to play the game the right way, a fact that will not be lost on them as they advance in their careers.

It is said that one's legacy is not leaving something FOR people it's leaving something IN people. I am quite confident that anyone who ever had an interaction with Mark was touched by his genuinely good nature, inspired by the way he lived his life and felt happy to have known him. I know I am.

Rest In Peace Bommer and God bless you and your family.

Dear Peach, Erinn, Cara, Ryuta, Matt, Ryan, Mr. and Mrs Bonshak and the extended Bonshak and Gober Families,

I write this with tears streaming down my face. Having read the many heartfelt condolences offered by so many friends, former classmates and teammates, co-workers, etc., I am reminded how blessed I have been to have coached Mark and to have been associated with his family throughout my entire teaching and coaching career at Whitehall. As an educator and coach, one hopes to have a positive impact on the lives of those youngsters we work with. In some cases, we as the educator or coach, receive much more than we could ever give. That certainly has been the case with my experiences as Mark's JV baseball coach and as his sons' and daughters' middle school counselor. Guys like Mike Gigler, Tony Vlahovic, and Jim Murtaugh have already expressed beautifully how much Mark meant to all of you and to the Whitehall Zephyr family.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers that all of you may find some peace and comfort in the coming days.

Sincerely,

Shock, anger, heartbreak, just a few words that have gone through my mind since I found out abut Mark's passing.

Mark was always a gentle soft spoken man and had only good words for everyone who had the honor of knowing him. His loss will affect many in the Whitehall community and most definitely for the WHS Class of 82.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire family on the loss of this wonderful husband, father, son, brother and man. Always cherish the memories you each have of Mark and keep them close to your hearts as he will always be with you surrounding you with his love and keeping watch over you all.
