The Reverend Elizabeth Barrett Hanning Diely, 75, of Emmaus, died February 3, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. She was the wife of the late Paul Rockwell Diely. The Reverend Diely was born in York, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Norman and Eva (Sweitzer) Hanning. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Wilson College and a Masters of Arts in Elementary Education from George Washington University. Her career in education began in the York Suburban School District as an elementary teacher. In 1969, she came to Emmaus to teach third grade at Jefferson Elementary School. The following year she became the Elementary Language Arts Supervisor for East Penn. She took time away from education to be home with her daughter, Pamela, but returned in 1993 for two years, joining the Muhlenberg College Education Department as Assistant Supervisor of Student Teaching. She took the Education for Ministry Course, attended the Bishop's School, and was a diocesan intern at Trinity Episcopal Church, Pottsville . Then in 2002 she became an ordained Episcopal Priest. The Reverend Diely served as Interim Rector at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Reading and was an Assisting Priest at St. Margaret's Church, Emmaus, where she was also a member. The Reverend Diely served in various leadership roles throughout her life: President of the Wilson College Club, Board of Directors for the Wilson College Alumnae Association, Wilson College Board of Trustees, National President of the Wilson College Alumnae Association, Board of Directors and Vice President of the American Association of University Women, and the Allentown Art Museum Auxiliary Board of Directors. She was involved in the Symphony Associations, Junior Service League, College Club of York, and Eastern Star, Mary Livingston Chapter 167, as Worthy Matron and District Deputy. She was named an "Outstanding Young Woman in America" in 1975. She is survived by a daughter, Pamela Diely Hunter and her husband, Matthew of Emmaus; two grandsons, Patrick and Ryan; cousins, Betty Granberry, Atlanta, GA, and Lenore King, Alexander City, AL. A memorial service with the celebration of Holy Eucharist will be held at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 150 Elm St., Emmaus, on February 15 at 7 PM.
