Kathryn Weikel Obituary

Kathryn F. Weikel, 97, widow of H. Joseph Weikel of Pottstown, PA died Friday, January 26 at Chestnut Knoll in Boyertown, PA. She was born in Palmerton, PA to Charles Pomeroy Fiske and Violet (Lewis) Fiske. Kathryn was a 1938 graduate of Stephen S. Palmer High School in Palmerton and a 1942 graduate of Cornell University, Ithaca, NY with a degree in Foods and Nutrition. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She moved to Pottstown in 1942 just prior to her marriage and was a cafeteria supervisor at Jacobs Aircraft Engine Company until leaving to raise her family. After her daughters started school, she began working at the Pottstown School District and for 25 years was the Director of Food Service. She was a member of PA School Business Officials. After retiring, Kathryn volunteered for 28 years at Pottstown Hospital. Until a year ago she was manning the information desk at the hospital and swimming with the 6:00 AM gang at the Pottstown YMCA. Independent and indomitable, she lived alone in her home until last June, and she drove herself around town until she moved. She was proud of the fact that in 80 years behind the wheel, she had never had an accident. She is survived by two daughters: Jane, wife of Bryce Manthorne, Upper Pottsgrove, and Kathryn Hoffman, Spencer, NY; three grandchildren: Christopher Manthorne, husband of Melissa, Catonsville, MD, Geoffrey Manthorne of Los Angeles, CA, and Kathryn Manthorne Skrzat, wife of Michael, East Coventry. She also has four great-grandchildren: Beatrix and Josephine Manthorne, and Evelyn and Simon Skrzat. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by four brothers: Carlton, Robert, William, and Richard, and a sister, Dorothy Appleton. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 17 at New Hanover Lutheran Church, 2941 Lutheran Rd, Gilbertsville, PA 19525. Visitation will be at 10 AM and services at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Kathryn's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN, 38101; Caring Hospice Services, 400 Commerce Dr., Suite C, Ft. Not sure what to say?

I remember Aunt Kathryn as a smiling, witty, intelligent woman. Since her daughters are close in age to me, we spent some magical times together in Palmerton at our grandfather's magnificent home. Even though I moved from Pennsylvania in my adult life, she always made a point of coming to see me when I returned to visit my parents. I will always admire her zest for life and aspire to live life as fully as she did!

My Sympathy to the family. I remember her as a kind and fun loving woman at the high school cafeteria. Once when a friend and I asked her for the recipe for her special salad dressing, she said , I can give you the recipe but know that it will make more than 5 gallons. We never did get that recipe

A never-fading memory for me is Bingie and Pop-pop riding down our street on their mopeds. They were so darn cool. I'll always remember Bingie with love. Her spirit and approach to living reminds me of my grandpa.
