Dan was an exceptional engineer and role model, deeply admired by all those who worked with him. I had the good fortune to work with him at Digital Equipment in Hudson, MA, and met him a number of times later in California. Without Dan, Digital would not have achieved the prominence it reached in the computer industry. The first MicroVAX chip, and especially the first Alpha chip, became reality thanks to his design contributions.

I was part of the CAD group that supported the microprocessor team at Digital. Dan took a serious interest in EDA, helping us create several tools that his team used quickly and effectively. Always generous sharing his knowledge, we eagerly listened to his comments and suggestions. This is a great loss for all of us who knew him.

My condolences to his family at this sad moment.

I had the honor of meeting Dan a few times while working on my first start-up company, Procket Networks, back in 1998-1999. I tried to interest Dan in joining forces, knowing fully well that I was boxing well above my weight :). Unbenownst to me, Dan was getting ready to launch SiByte at that time, so timing didn't work out on an opportunity for me to learn from Dan.

As a fellow Illini, I always looked up to Dan for what excellence in engineering could be, and combining that with his humility, he was always a role model for so many of us. RIP Dan, you will be missed.

Sorry to hear about Dan's death, my deepest sympathies to his family and friends. I worked with Dan at DEC and he was what I consider to be a genius. I worked on the T11 with Dan and he'd explain things to this lowly engineer with great patience and provided his knowledge to all of us. He was a great designer but even more important he was a great human being, he will be missed.
