Joan Todd was an original. She set a shining example of how to live fully, with intensity and passion. She was deeply principled and always stood for those principles. Her classes at SJSU were rigorous investigations that blended method with subject, demonstrations in how an historian should think. I feel so fortunate to have been her student.

I graduated from SJSU in 1969. She was one of my most memorable professors. This story of her life further amazes me.

While we always knew this day would come, it's hard to believe we no longer have this wonderful woman with us. Her intelligence, creativity, and excitement for her various passions were amazing, and a testament as to how marvelous life could be. My husband, David Apple, and I were lucky to be included in many of her New Year's Day parties, and truly enjoyed the eclectic gathering of both people and food. Jo was always a positive and encouraging force for her students and friends, and we have always felt fortunate to have had both Dr. Hal Todd and Dr. Jo Todd in our respective corners. Yes, we're sad to know she's no longer with us, but rejoice that she's back with her greatest love, Hal Todd.
