Dear Peggy and Family,

First I want to extend my sincere condolences to you and your family! My memories of Tom go back to Patrick Henry (Gold), my first submarine - where, as a very green JO, I learned so much from him on the way to earning my Dolphins. He was also often a valuable source of sage advice.

In later years I enjoyed his frequent "broadcasts" that brought back so many memories of our lives at that time, both at sea and ashore, He really reflected what it meant to be a Shipmate!

Like so many others who knew him, I have valued his friendship over the years and I will miss him!

To the Russell Family,

On behalf of the Charleston Base SUBVETS and Swamp Fox Chapter SUBVETS WWII, I offer you our sincere condolences on Tom's passing. We grieve with you on the loss of your loved one and our shipmate. The SUBVETS will have your family in our thoughts and prayers. There is no expiration date on the back of our dolphins and Tom, who earned his 'fish' when he qualified on USS SEA ROBIN SS-407, will always be remembered as a Brother of the Phin and a great Patriot.

Dear Peggy, Mark, Tom, Suzanne, and the entire circle of Tom's family n' friends,

Tom and I met at SUBVETS Groton, while I was doing a stint as PAO as well as helping with the Color Guard! I could tell you what I thought of him in my limited experiences with him...and it is much...and it is fondly memorable. However, I have a bereavement ministry where I spend much time in obits and guest books; I can tell you no more about Tom than have his friends already herein: world's most interesting man, Shipmate, mentor, man of service...on many important fronts, glue AND accomplished sailor, gentleman (Oh I'd have added that one, if needed!!!), and (sweetly eloquent) To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die... Always in our hearts,. I can't top that, and I pray they're just beginnin'!

Understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable...the grief...which will come...is painfully necessary...but is also a measure of the loving impact this very special man had on everyone! So truly sorry to hear about your husband, brother, friend. At least now he's at peace with our Lord...definitely keepin' y'all in my prayers!

When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable...she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m'dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.
SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)

Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!

We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!

So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!
