A truly great man, he has undoubtedly shaped so many lives of former students of Aberdeen university. Forever grateful for his guidance while at university - he was a key reason why I signed up for the Erasmus programme at Aberdeen and went on to meet my now wife - the passion he had for the programme along with all other aspects of the law school will be his incredible legacy. Thank you.

Sorry to hear this sad news. I was lucky enough to have Mr Lessels as Adviser of Studies (2002-2007) and he was the main driver of the Erasmus programme which was the springboard for my Masters at the College of Europe and work for the European Commission in Brussels. The academic and extra curricular successes of students were fostered thanks to his unfaltering encouragement and approachability. I have been in touch with alumni and Erasmus friends from across Europe who all resoundingly agree that Mr Lessels was a very much admired, respected and cherished member of the Aberdeen Law School. An absolute legend'.

It was a privilege to work with David at Aberdeen at the start of my career. A great example as an inspiring teacher who really cared for students and as someone who did all the unglamorous work necessary to keep a modern Law School going.

Mr Lessels had what I think was a combination of an exceptionally rare quality and a finely honed talent to inspire in others a drive to reach their full potential. His enigmatic and personable character combined with his ability to be simultaneously demanding in terms of his expectations, yet at the same time entirely reasonable, made him one of the very few people I have met who could impart not only knowledge, but also the tools to develop and succeed. He was hugely respected not only as a lecturer but also for being genuinely approachable and genuinely interested as an academic advisor. He had a spark that made him an unforgettable member of the law school and it was a privilege to be taught and advised by him. With my thoughts and greatest sympathies to his family and friends.

I was one of the lucky few who had David Lessels as an adviser for the entirety of my University degree. My fondest memory of him was our phone conversations while I was studying abroad which he told me in emails were to 'discuss the consequences of my results' when in reality it was all about whether I had been skiing or not. As well as being a brilliant adviser he was the most engaging of teachers who always brought life and laughter to the lecture theatre. My University experience would not have been the same without him. RIP.

An outstanding lecturer and person. Will never forget how he used to walk down to University with me if I met him en route. Will be sadly missed. Rest in peace.

He was the reason I went to the University of Aberdeen. I met him at an Open day and he sold the city, the law school and the university to me, despite the weather.

A wonderful man.

He was, to all who were fortunate enough to be exposed to him, a legend, and will continue to be held in that highest of regards in the sincerest of fashions. As the man who not only admitted me to study law at Aberdeen, but who ran the open day (when I arrived rather late!), he was instrumental in me choosing Aberdeen hands down. His legal catchphrases will never be forgotten, and will always raise a smile. Outside of the lecture theatre, with theatre' being the most appropriate of names for his teaching platform, he was so kind, personable and had a genuine interest in everything I was doing that was extra curricular. He guided me through the most critical years of my life and made it such fun at the same time. He supported me when I needed him, professionally and personally. He will be sorely, sorely missed. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
