John Laver was a brilliant professor and expert in his field of phonetics and phonology. I loved his classes back in 1994 and he really inspired me. May he rest in peace. Jurgen Basstanie, Belgium

John was my tutor in First Ordinary Phonetics in 1967, part of the team that inspired me to continue with Phonetics and Linguistics. There must be hundreds of other students who, like me, were inspired by his work and were in awe of his learning and phonetic abilities. He leaves an important legacy in Phonetics.

John was my neighbour. He had a good sense of humour, grace, a true gentle man and a gentleman at all times. You are missed.
