I had the pleasure of watching Joe on TV 2 when I was growing up outside of Detroit. There are not very many anchors left like Joe on TV anymore. Joe loved to deliver the news straight, and he also loved the public service side of his job.

My condolences go out to Joe's family, colleagues, and friends.

I had the pleasure of working with Joe at KSBW. When he was hired all the others anchors got demoted to make room for him. I was one of them. I was pretty young and cocky at the time, and so not too happy about things. But when Joe arrived it all made sense. He was just so great at what he did. It was impossible to have a chip on your shoulder because he was so talented and so nice. Eventually I left and moved to the Midwest and we lost touch. But one day I got a call from him when I was in St. Louis. The station I was working at was trying to lure him to be our main anchor. He asked a lot of thoughtful questions. When he learned that coming would result in a dominos of demotions, he told me "that's not good you should always try to avoid that if you can, you don't want a newsroom against you when you walk in the door for the first time." I was disappointed he didn't come to work there, and I didn't get the chance to work with him a second time. I learned a lot from him. He was a great anchor, newsroom leader and I could tell a loving father. I feel for his family right now.

Joe was a wonderful human being. His kindness and caring showed through in his teaching. He was great colleague and friend. I remember his telling me about when he traveled to Cuba to scuba dive, and being a diver myself, I was envious. It was also funny because he had to ask the Cuban immigration agent not to stamp his passport because the U.S. didn't allow its citizens to visit Cuba and he wouldn't be allowed back in the U.S. if his passport showed he had gone to Cuba. (He had to fly to and from Cuba from Canada.) He was adventurous. His love of animals was an inspiration.

I LOVED to watch Joe and his co-anchor, Beverly Payne Draper back in the 70's on Channel 2. He will be missed.
