I was proud to call Captain Johnson, my instructor, and my friend. He was a wonderful educator, and aviator; and loved doing both. I enjoyed flying on many occasions with him from the Auburn University Airport, and later on occasion, from Montgomery.
The Auburn Aviation alumni are a tightly-knit group, and those from my class considered Captain Johnson their friend, as well as their instructor. This was certainly true in my case, as he was also friends with my wife, Katherine; before and after we married. He would frequently ask about her during her days in medical school, and was genuinely interested in our progression through life.
Bill, to us you were a hero. Your military accomplishments were considerable, and fascinating. Thank you for sharing your wisdom, kindness, and friendship with us all. Many of us went on to be instructors, and passed your lessons on to our students. In this way, I truly hope we brought honor to your name.
Blue Skies,
David & Katherine Windham

I am glad to reflect that Bill was in my life and part of my college experience at Auburn. He reinforced integrity, fairness, and chewed me out when I needed it to make sure I did the right thing. Rest In Peace Good Sir.
