Thomas Britt Obituary

Thomas Maurice Britt III of New York City, formerly of Erdenheim Pa, Hong Kong and Sag Harbor, NY. died suddenly on November 9th. Tom was graduated from Georgetown University and earned both juris doctor and master in business administration degrees from New York University. He practiced law at Sullivan & Cromwell and later became a partner at Rogers & Wells in New York where he was an innovator in the field of cross-border finance, creating legal structures to provide emerging market companies, particularly in Latin America, with access to U.S. and European capital markets. Thereafter, he established Rogers & Wells’ Hong Kong office, expanding the firm’s global presence and played an important role in the firm’s subsequent merger with the law firm of Clifford Chance. He later joined Debevoise & Plimpton as a partner in Hong Kong, representing private equity clients in structuring Chinese investments, before becoming a China-focused private equity investor himself. Throughout his career, and particularly in the nearly two decades he spent in Asia, Tom mentored an entire generation of lawyers who credit him with their professional accomplishments. Most recently, Tom was focused on private equity investments in Latin America, returning to a region where his legal career had originally flourished. Tom was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. As his friends and professional colleagues who gathered in reaction to Tom’s unexpected passing noted, Tom was an exceptionally gifted lawyer, a successful investor and a mentor to many. He is remembered for his sharp intellect, his positivity and his infectious enthusiasm about everything he did. Out of the office, Tom enjoyed playing golf and tennis with his family and friends, and he enjoyed exploring and traveling to many foreign countries, especially Bali. Tom was the son of the late Thomas M Jr, and Patricia Britt. He is survived by his children Thomas Maurice (Tiger) Britt IV and Brooke Helen Britt, and their mother Stacey French Britt of Stamford, CT. He was also survived by his sisters Susan McGoldrick (John), Joann Fitzgerald (William dec’d) and Maryellen Miller (George) and multiple nieces and nephews. He was pre deceased by his sister Barbara Cronin (Bob dec’d). Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday November 21st at 10:30 am. Saint Genevieve Church 1225 Bethlehem Pike Flourtown PA 19031. Relatives and friends are invited to the church after 10 am. Interment private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Georgetown University, Gift Processing, Department #0734, Washington DC 20073 or Saint Genevieve School at the above address.

Not sure what to say?

Just found out about Tom's passing. I am shocked and saddened. I pray that God is with you and watching over your family. I worked for almost three years and even though I was of much lower rank in profession he treated me with friendship and even sent me Christmas cards for years. We spoke sporadically and recently I looked him up for advice and found out of his untimely passing. I send you my respect, gratitude and affection and you and your family are in my prayers.
Never will forget you sir !!

Hello Tom !!

I know you're watching us up there in Heaven!

Thank you for your guidance and wisdom as my mentor, my role model, my friend and my inspiration.

You were always kind and generous, willingly helping young people when they were confused or lost in the windy path of life, and teaching them the model of a virtuous life by your example.

There is an old Chinese saying that under Heaven, no party lasts forever ().

We will one day all join you in Heaven where I was told the parties last forever.

I still remember when we were in Yangon, Burma, and you bought us drinks. We shall reciprocate when we meet again!

Cheers, and peace unto you my

When finding out of Tom's passing on his birthday November 9th, I was filled with inconsolable grief and sadness. With a heavy heart and fighting back tears, I am flooded with memories of the young man who sent me countless love letters and loved me like no other. Tom was my first love. We shared many experiences and moments together beginning in high school and for several years far too many to share until life chose different paths for us. There was a part of me that never stopped loving Tom and I thought of him fondly over the years especially on his birthday. Such a great loss for his children and family. I will always remember Tom and you his family in my prayers.

Tom was a great friend in college, and the years afterwards, as he pursued his joint MBA/JD at NYU ... he is the godfather of my middle daughter, and I'm glad to have spent as much time as we did, early in his life. We would exchanges messages over the years, and I know he cared very much about making an impact on the world. Rest in peace, friend, for your spirit will carry on in all those you touched! My condolences to the family & friends he leaves behind.

I met Tom in college in DC when I was at GWU and he was at Georgetown. We later went to law school together at NYU. He was a very good friend then and really helped me get through law school. He was definitely one of the smartest people I have ever met and a nice and fun guy to boot. We had a lot of good times together in NY City during and after law school back in the 1980s and he made my life a little better for having known him. Take comfort in knowing he was a good and empathetic person who had a positive affect on the lives of others. You are in my thoughts and prayers over this holiday season. I am very sorry for your loss.

To The Britt Family and friends,
Tom was a classmate at St. Gens, I always new he would be very successful, in what ever he would do In his life's adventures, I had not had any contact with Tom since graduating grade school. I often wondered what became of Tom Britt, after reading Toms Obituary, it is very clear to me, that he was indeed very successful, with a loving family, and rewarding career. Tom was always a gentleman, even at the ripe old age of 13 years. (When I last saw him), God Bless you Tom Britt, God bless your family and friends, Gone to soon, Please accept my deepest condolences, for your our loss.

Tom was my first boss when I graduated from law school, and I worked with him for almost 3 years in Hong Kong. Even among incredibly gifted and hard working attorneys, Tom was a rock star. No one was smarter, and no one worked harder; he explained difficult concepts as if he were reading a book. He could have stayed in New York and had a perfectly fine career, but he was a trailblazer and saw Asia as the incredible new market that it would later become. Tom had some incredible successes--he was chosen to build the Hong Kong office of an international law firm when he was only 35 years old, and was the attorney responsible for listing the first Asian Internet companies (China.com, AsiaInfo, Korea ThruNet) in the United States. They were incredibly complex and risky deals, and he was the first one to pull them off. I will always look back at my time working with Tom as among the most exciting of my life, when an entire market was opening up, and we were in the eye of the storm. The general public would not have knowledge of the people who make the deals happen, but for those in the industry, Tom was recognized as a true innovator, unique talent and beloved mentor. Nobody did it better, and he will always be my hero.
