George BOUGADIS Obituary

Published by Montreal Gazette from Feb. 17 to Feb. 19, 2018.
BOUGADIS, George Peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at the age of 88. Many thanks to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at the Jewish General Hospital. Born in Tripi (Sparti), Greece, "Mr. George" or "General George" of George General Auto Repairs (corner Marie Anne E. and St. Laurent Blvd; Plateau) since the 1950s arrived in Montreal shortly after his WWII military and resistance service as a truck and tank engine mechanic. Like so many veterans of "The Greatest Generation", he embodied the idea of the Canadian immigration dream in what he always called "the greatest country in the world". After decades of hard work, sacrifice, great success, and even a few spectacular failures, by any measure, he lived a life fulfilled. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna (nee Kiorpelidis), his son George Andrew (Cheryl), his daughter Lea Olga Stamatikia, and grandson Joshua Andrew; his three surviving brothers: Tony (Eleni), John (Sophia), and Peter (Soula) and his sisters: Tasia (John) and Leta (the late, Thano); sister-in-law, Thalia (the late, George; the late, Mike), brother-in-law George (Carmen); along with many nieces and nephews and their extensive families. He will be sadly missed by his family, many friends, generations of clients, and apprentice/master bodymen, painters, and engine mechanics. Visitation will take place at Urgel Bourgie - Athos: 1255 Beaumont, Mont-Royal (514) 735-2025 from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, February 19, 2018. A funeral ceremony will take place at: Saint George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2455 Cote Ste Catherine Road, Outremont, QC H3T1A8 (514) 738 3202 at 10 a.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Final resting place, Urgel Bourgie Cemetery in TMR. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jewish General Hospital Charitable Trust in memory of George Bougadis would be appreciated.

Uncle George had the honorary title of "The General". This was a nod to huge "George General Auto Garage" sign over the place that most of us went to seek his guidance. As a young boy I remembered all those people he would sit with and share ideas with. I would wonder what could they be talking about? That was, of course, only until it became my turn.

George was a good listener and he could cut right through you with that knowing look he could give you. You couldn't BS him. George touched the lives of countless people by generously sharing of his time and more importantly his hard earned wisdom.

Hew will be sorely missed.

Our sincerest condolences to the entire family.

In a passing moment of clarity when my mother and I told my father of his brothers passing his words were:

"I will miss you brother, you were the foundation on which our family grew. "

And lovingly referred to him as "O prostattis tis eccoyaneas."

Uncle George had a special role. Not being our father, he never the less was a great mentor, friend and supporter, to us all in many different ways than anyone else in our lives.

His loss is a particularly hard one, however, it is also filled with the years of happy memories and life forming guidance lessons which, we will never forget.

The special connection that we had will be sorrily missed.

We share our condolences with his family and all our relatives. May Uncle George rest in peace.

My father Andreas Mantelis worked for many years for Mr. Bougadis as a master bodyman at his garage on Marie-Anne. I remember as a teenager visiting my dad at the garage on many occasions and always ran into Mr. Bougadis who always greeted me with a smile. My father always told me that he was the smartest and fairest employer he ever worked for. My father had the highest respect for him and loved working there. After my dad passed away in 1991 I continued
going to George General Auto Repair to fix my own car because I trusted him and most of all respected him. To this day I still pass by the old boarded up garage and peak inside and imagine my dad working there and Mr. Bougadis walking around and supervising his men.
May God bless him and may he rest in forever lasting peace.
