Rev. Johnny Hawks

The Rev. Johnny Ray Hawks, 84, of Dobson, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. The Rev. Hawks was born May 3, 1941, in Surry County, one of eight children born to the late Lester and Rosie Martin Hawks. A man of deep faith and steadfast devotion, Johnny was a charter member of Day Spring Baptist Church and later became a dedicated member of Zephyr Baptist Church. His love for the Lord and commitment to the church were evident throughout his life. For many years, Johnny worked faithfully at Dixie Concrete, where he was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and humble spirit. Later in life, he answered a higher calling and stepped into the ministry, sharing the gospel with compassion and conviction. As a minister, he touched countless lives with his heartfelt sermons, gentle counsel, and unwavering faith. Johnny will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, and lifelong commitment to serving both God and others. His legacy lives on in the many lives he impacted and the example he set for all who knew him. He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Rose and Henry Dean, Betty Leftwich, Vicky and Jeff McMillian, and Dawn and Chris Marshall; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Sandy Hawks; twenty grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Holt Hawks; a son, Danny Hawks; a son-in-law, A.W. Leftwich; two great-grandchildren, Gabriel Kingsbury and Lilliana Torres; two sisters, Lillian Holt and Ella Jones; and five brothers, Charlie Hawks, Thurman Hawks, Mack Hawks, Warren Hawks, and Jack Hawks. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Bro. Craig Key and Bro. John Ables officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
