George F. Cerekwas
AGE: 85 • South River
George F. Cerekwas, 85, of South River, passed away Sunday September 15th 2013 at the Pavilions at Forestall Village in Princeton. Born in South River, he was a lifelong borough resident.
Before his retirement, George worked for the Borough of South River Police Department for 36 years, retiring as chief in 1990. He was a member of the Middlesex County Association of Chiefs of Police, the South River PBA 62, the South River American Legion Post 214 and the South River VFW Post 1451. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War Conflict and a member of Ss Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in South River, where he was a member of their Men's Club.
He is predeceased by his siblings Olga, Sophie, Fred, Lizzy and Marge. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Elaine Carney, his daughters Judie and her husband James Grandjean of Jackson, Linda Kestner of Hillsboro, Carol Clark of Spostwood and his granddaughters Heather Clark and Courtney Kestner. Funeral services will be Wednesday 11 am from the Maliszewski Funeral Home 218 Whitehead Ave South River with an 11:30 am service at Ss Peter and Paul RO Church in South River. Burial will follow at Ss Peter and Paul RO Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday 6 pm to 9 pm only. Panahida services will take place at 7pm on Tuesday evening. Members of the South River American Legion Post 214 will hold services at 6:15 pm on Tuesday and the South River VFW Post 1451 will hold services at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in George's name to Ss Peter and Paul RO Church 76 Whitehead Ave South River NJ 08882. So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He was a super nice man and I am sure many from SR were greeting him when he arrived in heaven. I am know my Dad, your Dad and a few others are reminiscing about their times on the police force and having some laughs.
