Our family has such fond memories of Shirley as she came to our rural community to teach in our little one room school. She visited our home often in the evenings and we played many games of Clue with our beloved teacher. Since then she visited a few times during her summer cottage visits and we were thrilled to join them to celebrate their 50th anniversary.Last year I completed a book documenting our Barlow family's pioneer days and life on the farm through the years. Shirley is featured in that book and how I wish I could have shown it to her. I was shocked to read of her passing in today's Temiskaming Speaker. I had no idea and send our sincere sympathy. I'm so thankful for the contact we maintained over many years.

Dear Shirley,

You have welcomed me and my family to your house countless times over more than 30 years each time I visited Shyam to come and work with him at the lab. Coming to your home after a long working day and long commute was really 'coming home'. A tasteful meal that you had prepared was waiting and conversation with you at the dining table went often on, long after Shyam retired to the living room. During the weekends you always found a destination for a stroll, a visit to a museum or a garden, a meeting with your friends. I am very thankful for letting me becoming part of your family.

Dear Shyam,

Of course you were always there to make my stays productive and enjoyable. I admired you a lot as a wonderful scientist before getting to know you personally, but you and Shirley opened your house and your family as if I was the important person.
I want to express my deep feelings of regret now that Shirley has passed away. You and Shirley made a marvelous couple. Michele and myself will always remember her warmth and good humour.
