I first met Stephen in 1990, and in short order had the great pleasure of getting to know his wonderful family.
And if this was a forum to recount all Steve meant to me, I might never stop writing.
But he would never want me, or any of us, to carry on in such a manner.
With that said:
If ever you were looking for a friend who nodded his head in approval, saying all you wanted to hear, and paid half attention through it all, Stephen Vercollone was the last man on earth to call.
If you wanted a friend who was all in every time, not missing a word or a beat, and would drop all he was doing to be by your side...we all knew who to call, and which door to knock on.
To Andrea and Lisa and Bo and all of Steve's family, you were his life.
To all of Stephen's fellow Naval officers, you were his center.
I was never once with Steve when you did not speak of you all, nearly glowing with pride and missing you more every time.
And for my part, I never in my life had a friend like you.
We all salute you, my friend.
And our love only grows.

I met Stephen, in Ohio, when he toured with his author friend to various schools selling books. We've kept in touch all through these years - calling on each others birthdays. My condolences to his daughters and their families. BB Oliver

Family and friends,
My deepest condolences to you all. I was very proud to be one of Stephen's life-long Navy buddies. He was my go-to guy when I wanted to get goofy. And he always had an interest in my wardrobe, or lack thereof. In the '80s, he kept me in Mass. Electric sweaters ( courtesy of his mom ) and, most recently, a Bob's Big Boy shirt that he thought I needed. I was able to counter with a couple of Billy Goat Tavern shirts that he greatly admired.
We use to make $1.00 sports wagers and once, after he lost a 2013 bet, sent me $5.00 - $1.00 for the bet and $4.00 to buy some cheap beer. I still have that $5.00 and now I'm going to do what he wanted. I'm going to a tavern that has $1.00 beer specials, plop that $5.00 bill on the bar and have my first 5 beers on my Navy buddy.
Once again, my sympathies to you all.

Bob Milhizer

I had the privilege to meet, know and serve with Steve Vercollone aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA 43)....50 years ago! That experience was the foundation of a friendship that spanned 3000+ miles, several reunions scattered across the country, hundreds of great memories and thousands of laughs. Steve's unquenchable zest for life, boundless energy and extraordinary courage to face the "hand life dealt him" singled him out as a role model for all of us who knew him. His passing reminds us to live every day to the fullest.....just like he did. May God hold him in the hollow of His hands. Paul Fieberg
