In the early 70's I wanted to start my aviation career, I had my private pilot's certificate .I was fueling general aviation airplanes . As I was standing on the ramp one day I noticed a Cessna 402 twin engine fly by the tower with the gear down and a wheel missing getting ready to make an emergency landing. My boss who knew the pilot said " that's Bill Roberts flying , he won't have a problem landing" . I watched Bill land with only one wheel easily . I thought this guy is "cool" ,I want to meet him . The aircraft was towed in and I introduced myself to Bill . He was very friendly and beaming with confidence. I asked him if he would help me fly with him for instrument and multiengine instruction . He hesitated but took me in . His flying skill was second to none. I was so impressed and thrilled to have him instructing me .It was the beginning of a great friendship and aviation career for us both. He was a total gentleman and confidant . After corporate we both fortunately got hired at Piedmont Airlines in the late 70's and soon made Captain. My heart is sad as we pilots say when a friend has "flown west" . I am and will always miss you "my friend" . My heart felt condolences to Debbie ,Erin and Courtney. I promise to stay near .
